Hi all,
Just a little confused as to the meaning of 'POSE' on my
relative's headstone in Italy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Nick

Re: 'pose' on headstone
The headstone "was posed" by the grandson (or nephew) Salvatore De Lucia

Re: 'pose' on headstone
It can mean "to place or arrange" or "to put". It simply means the nephew (nipote) arranged to have the headstone installed (and likely paid for the stonework). Perhaps no other family members could afford to do so...nrepole wrote: 10 Jan 2022, 12:09 ???''Pose/posed'' is a very unusual expression?????

Re: 'pose' on headstone
The passato remoto tense of the verb porre in the 3rd person singular is "pose" (he/she put, placed, laid, etc.), which would fit the above translations. The passato remoto can be anything more than a few days ago, depending on vantage point.
I'm no scholar so I'll let the native-speaking Italians decide if it's more appropriate than the passato prossimo tense ("ha posto"), he/'she has put, has placed, has laid, etc., which I think can also be used for unfinished action.
Either way "pose" seems to mean the grandson/nephew is responsible for the headstone being placed at the grave. I doubt it's meant to convey actual timing, just that he did it.
