In records in which he appeared in person, Emanuele is listed as having the following occupations (in time order) in rural Sicily:
his marriage
1823 = proprietario
births of his children:
1826 = industrioso
1830 = possidente
1833 = industrioso
1836 = proprietario
1836 = proprietario
1840 = proprietario
In all cases, he's addressed as "Don".
In his death record, he's listed as possidente. The informants weren't blood relations
His father was a pastore.
What can we infer about his occupation?

Re: Emanuele's Occupation
Possidense and proprietario seem to point to ownership, most often to land owner.
On Emanuele's marriage record, his father-in-law was listed as a land surveyor. I believe his father-in-law might have owned much land, so maybe this son of a shepherd inherited some land when he married.
How would a land owner make money?

Re: Emanuele's Occupation
Emanuele's father and brothers were all pastore and not addressed as Don. Emanuele was addressed as Don from his marriage record on, and listed as some variation of owner from his marriage record on.
In fact, Emanuele's brother Nicolo married his wife's sister so they had the same father-in-law who was addressed as Don and employed as a land surveyor. But Nicolo remained a pastore and was never addressed as Don. even though he had the same father-in-law as Emanuele.
If Emanuele inherited (dowry?) the Don title and owner occupation from his father-in-law would he have been recorded as such on his marriage record or only after marriage? Or, is it more likely Emanuele was called Don and employed as an owner on his own?
