How common would it be for a priest in the U.S. in 1929 to transcribe a witness's name "Anna" as "Giovanna" in a marriage document hand written in Italian when the person's full name was just "Anna"?
I'm certain the correct name was "Anna" so I'm trying to figure out if the priest made a clerical error or just assumed "Anna" was short for "Giovanna".
Is "Anna" even ever used as a nickname for "Giovanna" by Italians?
The American priest had Irish ancestry but apparently learned to speak and write Italian. Perhaps his mother was Italian.
