Surname of ancestor's second wife

Post by ottolino »

Buonasera a tutti,

Below is the link to the death certificate (on the left hand side) of one of my ancestors, who is reported to be husband of "Maria Teresa ..."

https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... ud17147057

I can't quite figure out the surname, the indexer reported it to be "Maria Teresa FUOCE" but I've never heard of that surname before. I would have said it was more "FEROCE"... but I'm starting to have doubts on this too, particularly because the first letter lacks the "-" that should cross the "F", making it look more like an "I".

Hope you can help! :)
Ringraziamenti anticipati.

I can't tell but if it helps, Feroce does occur in Naples and the first letter doesn't resemble the "T" in Teresa or Tosto.

When I looked at it I thought it was possibly the letter "I" as well or a lazy letter "F". I noticed a tree on line where they had written "Feroce" but I don't think it is that. It looks like either "Fuoce" or "Iuoce" neither of which exist, but I am wondering whether the surname might be "Iucci" which appears in the town, and the clerk just wrote down what he thought he heard. The closest to the name "Fuoce" that I have seen is "Fuoco". Fuoco would end in a "ko" sound while Fuoce would end in a softer sound so probably not "Fuoco"

I had a look through some marriage indices going back to 1820, but didn't see a marriage there for Raffaele so maybe the wives weren't from the town or he married before 1820. He obviously had children to his first wife as they are mentioned in the Death Act.

Many thanks for your input, Angela and DarkerHorse.
Needless to say, I am even more confused :)

I had a look in the same registry and found this: https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 65/0ZOedXB
The gentleman whose death is reported on the left-hand page is called "Trufolo" but the "T" looks just like the first letter of my ancestor's wife's surname...

If that is really a "T" then the surname could be "Tucci", a well-spread surname in Napoli.

Out of interest, I also searched for Tucci in the Avvocata area of Napoli, and came across quite a few documents, some of which are below, and all of which have a T that looks quite similar to the "presumed T" of my original link:
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... ud17151484
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... ud17154515
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... ud17175668

I might just go with that, and assume that FUOCE is actually TUCCI:
- the F is missing the "-" in the middle
- the O could well be a C that has been "closed" a bit too much
- the sound of "CCE" and "CCI" is similar, as pointed out by Angela
- in Neapolitan, the last vowel is rarely pronounced, so "TUCCE" and "TUCCI" would actually sound the same

... when people say that genealogy is boring, I look at them with pity... :)
