Marriage record help - zio in quinto?

Post by kpicozzi »

Hello. I request help reading some words of this page from the 1857 marriage record of Lucia Grimaldi.

https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 19/02J4zxj

As best I can tell, because her parents and grandparents were all deceased, all of her living male relatives were listed here (I guess to consent to the marriage). This is my first encounter with the degrees of relationship and I'm having trouble reading some of the handwriting which makes it even more difficult to figure out the relationships.

There are 6 men listed. I already know how 4 of them are related to her, though knowing their relationship doesn't help me make sense of the terms used in this document. I suppose it's easier if I list the 6 men here and note which parts I'm having trouble with:

1st - Domenico Grimaldi - I already know he was her brother. I can't read the last word "germano della ______".

2nd - Donato Grimaldi - I don't know how he was related to her. Again, it's the words at the end I can't read: "Cugino in quarto grado __________". I searched other posts on this forum to learn what "in quarto grado" means and I think he was probably her 2nd cousin which would mean Donato's father Michele and Lucia's father Ormisda were probably 1st cousins, but I don't really understand how the degrees work.

3rd - Benedetto Grimaldi - This is my big question. Again I can't read the last word. It appears to say "zio in quinto della _________". Google translate says it means "5th uncle" but that doesn't make any sense. He's listed under paternal relatives, so he had to be related to her father somehow. Her father didn't have a brother, so he wasn't an uncle. I'm completely clueless with this one.

4th - Tommaso Franchitti - I know who he was. He was married to Lucia's mother's sister and would therefore be her uncle, but I can not read what it says his relationship was. I can't read any of the words written after his age.

5th - Giovanni Franchitti - He was also married to one of Lucia's mother's sisters so it makes sense that his relationship description just says "idem" (ditto).

6th - Vincenzo Croce - He was Lucia's mother's half-brother, and therefore Lucia's uncle, but I can not read anything written after the word "zio". I also find it strange that he was listed last as he was her uncle by blood and the 2 above were only her uncles by marriage.

I know this post is long, but in sum I really just need help with reading the handwriting of the relationships but I'm MAINLY interested in figuring out what "zio in quinto" means.

Thank you for any insight. I always search the forum for similar questions before posting to see if I can find answers without asking for help, but I could not find anything to help explain "zio in quinto".
