I've identified a family on my maternal grandfather's surname line. I may be able to get the Y haplogroup from a male surname cousin - 3rd, 4th, or 5th cousin to me, depending upon who wants to share.

How likely will my maternal grandfather's Y haplogroup be the same as my cousin's relative's?

You will only get it if there's a direct male-male connection from the distant ancestor to the cousin -- if there's any break in the paternal line between to two relatives, the Y-DNA will not carry through. So your cousin's paternal direct line would have to be unbroken. Chances are good if the surname matches, but verify a direct paternal connection first.
