Help! Looking for my husband's grandmother's birth certificate: Vita Pirtoliere?

Post by ashumake »

Hello all! And thank you in advance.
We are trying to find my husband's grandmother's birth certificate. The basic story is this:
Her name in the US was "Vera Petrolere", she eventually married "Carl Vitale".
We have found the ship manifest at Ellis Island where she arrived, she is listed as Vita (her real Italian name) Pitroleri, 10 months old. She was born 17 September, 1922. She traveled with her mother, Sofia Soltario, and her sister Caterina Pitroleri, 3 years old. It says they were coming from Carini, where Vita's father's mother lived, last name Randazzo. We think Sofia was originally from Palermo but may have grown up in Carini? She was adopted by the Ferranti family. It lists the three of them as being born in Petralia Soprana, however, we think this is incorrect as many times they would just list the birth place of the father.
Vita's father's name is "Guiseppe Petroleri or Petroliere". In the US he went by Joe or Joseph Petrolere for most of his life. Here's where it gets confusing- we actually FOUND his birth certificate from Petralia Soprana. He was a "foundling" who was given the name "Guisppe Pitroleri or Pitrolisi", which literally means "from Petralia", so not a real last name. He was sent to an orphanage in Palermo.
So, essentially, we're trying to figure out a) what town Vita was born in and b) what her real name would have been. Since she was listed as Vita Petroleri, and since Guiseppe kept that last name in the US (spelled Petrolere), we're ASSUMING that that was in fact her last name.
I've attached the documents. If anyone has any other ideas we're so grateful! Thank you!
