I lettori ricordano la grave sentenza inflitta dalla Corte Superiore contro Salvatore Conti, nativo di Caiazzo in quel di Caserta, quale autore dell'uccisione di Angelo Zambrino, omicidio avvenuto nella nostra citta all'angolo di Myrtle ed East St.
Il Conti, quantunque confesso, e con tutto ciò che aveva dalla sua l'attenuante dell'omicidio in rissa e della provocazione, come ebbero da attestare alcuni testimoni, veniva condannato, in base al verdetto dei giurati, per omicidio in secondo grado, al massimo della pena, ai lavori forzati a vita.
Ora, se come ebbero ad attestare alcuni testimoni, il Conti venne minacciato da quattro giovani, fra i quali il morto, ed egli ha dovuto sostenere una lotta impari, per difendere la propria vita, ci sembra che si è di troppo ecceduti.
Noi non siamo teneri per tutti quelli che fanno uso delle armi e che ammazzano il prossimo, anzi plaudiamo ogni qualvolta i detentori di esse vengono puniti severamente dalla legge.
Intanto sappiamo che il condannato ha ricorso in appello ed ha prescelti quali suoi avvocati l'egregio e valoroso avvocato Palmieri di New York e l'avvocato Goodhart di questa città. Ora si attende che la Corte Superiore fissi la data del processo.
Speriamo che dalla revisione di questo possa emergere quella luce sufficiente per decidere i giudici ad emanare una giusta sentenza.
Se il povero Conti è innocente, giusta le attenuanti, giustizia vuole che la ingiusta e rigorosa pena venga scemata.

Readers recall the serious sentence imposed by the Superior Court against Salvatore Conti, a native of Caiazzo in Caserta, as the author of the murder of Angelo Zambrino, a murder that took place in our city at the corner of Myrtle and East St.
Conti, although he confessed, and with all that he had on his side the extenuating circumstance of murder in brawl and provocation, as some witnesses had to attest, was sentenced, on the basis of the verdict of the jurors, for murder in the second degree, at the maximum penalty, to hard labor for life.
Now, if, as some witnesses have testified, Conti was threatened by four young men, among whom was the dead man, and he had to endure an unequal struggle to defend his life, it seems to us that it is one too excessive.
We are not kind to all those who use weapons and kill their neighbors, but we applaud every time the owners of them are severely punished by the law.
In the meantime we know that the convict has appealed and has chosen as his lawyers the distinguished and valiant lawyer Palmieri of New York and the lawyer Goodhart of this city. The Superior Court is now expected to set a trial date.
We hope that the revision of this will provide enough light to decide the judges to issue a just sentence.
If poor Conti is innocent, extenuating circumstances are justified, justice demands that the unjust and rigorous punishment be lessened.
These are our vows.
