WHERE to obtain an Italian birth record from Alexandria, Egypt if it can not found in Italy?
WHERE to obtain an Italian birth record from Alexandria, Egypt if it can not found in Italy?
Hello community!
We're searching for my Italian father-in-law's birth records. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt 1934.
His parents were both born in Brindisi, Italy but married in Alexandria, Egypt in 1918. We have both their birth records from Brindisi and both their death records from Rome, Italy (where we believed they moved to after the Suez Canal crisis)
My father-in-law married his first wife in Alexandria, Egypt in 1955 (we have divorce papers to confirm place/date) and then left Egypt during the Suez Canal crisis. We believe he and his wife were in Italy for a year or so (possibly in immigration facilities) before coming to England to live permanently in 1958. They were able to live here as his first wife gave up her Maltese citizenship for UK citizenship.
We have searched for my father-in-law's birth record online in the Italian Ancestry Portal with no luck (Brindisi's records are incomplete though, but we have found his mother's birth).
We have applied to the Brindisi Comune and they have written back to inform us there is no record of him there.
(They do have his parent's birth records and their marriage confirmation, which was detailed on his father's birth record when we received it)
We are hoping to visit the Brindisi and Lecce State Archives next month and book a viewing room to search some records.
We have spoken to our local Italian consulate here in England, where my father-in-law's passport was renewed in the 1970's, but they have no records of him on file now. (His passport confirms his date/place of birth and states 'Roma' under the 'Domiciliato' section).
We hired a Italian genealogist company to find his parent's death records in Rome, as we had no other details for them. We also asked them to search for details/records on my father-in-law too but they could not find anything in Rome at all for him.
If my father-in-law's birth records can not be found in Italy, can anyone advise us of where we could look/apply to in Alexandria, Egypt please? Thank you!
Any help/advice is very much greatly appreciate.

Try contacting the Italian consular office in Egypt or searching archives in Alexandria. Church sources or local newspapers might reveal hidden clues. Best of luck with your search!

Thank you for your response and advice, it's greatly appreciated.
I have now contacted the Italian consulate in Egypt and awaiting a response.
We did found his elder sister Cristina's birth records in the Brindisi State Archives, they had been transcribed from Alexandria Egypt where we now know she had also been born after her parent's marriage.
Again, thank you for your help.

Re: WHERE to obtain an Italian birth record from Alexandria, Egypt if it can not found in Italy?
Italians born abroad are normally required to register their birth at the Italian consulate in that nation. Furthermore, the information may have been transferred to the Comune Sprunki Game (city of origin) in Italy where the individual's family originated. In reality, you should get professional counsel on these regulations.

If both the Town Offices of Brindisi and the Consulate can't issue a birth certificate, it can be reconstructed going through a Court in Italy (presumably in Brindisi), provided that you have documents proving his place and date of birth. If that's the case, I can help.

Re: WHERE to obtain an Italian birth record from Alexandria, Egypt if it can not found in Italy?
The search for your father-in-law's birth records highlights the complexities of genealogical research, especially across countries. Engaging local archives and consulates is essential, but exploring Egyptian civil records may also yield valuable insights. Community support can enhance this search.
Re: WHERE to obtain an Italian birth record from Alexandria, Egypt if it can not found in Italy?
Thank you all for your responses, advice and assistance in the search for my father-in-law's birth certificate.
We can now fully confirm that the Brindisi State Archives and Brindisi Commune (Town hall) does not have any birth records for my father-in-law, Salvatore Veste.
And as I have still not received a response from the Italian consulate in Egypt, I believe our search will now have to be moved to different authorities in Egypt to found his birth record.
As he was born in Alexandria, Egypt does anyone please have any advice as to which authority I should contact to ask for a search of my father-in-law's birth records?... I do not know where to start when it comes to searching in Egypt or how to connect authorities over there
Again, any help and advice would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: WHERE to obtain an Italian birth record from Alexandria, Egypt if it can not found in Italy?
You're wasting your time with the Italian Consulate in Egypt and I find it hard to believe that Brindisi don't have this on record, especially if Salvatore was a first generation born outside of Italy... the parents would always send back information. I'd come across on multiple times where for eg. a family member was born in 1901 Egypt but the home town consulate didn't receive the information or didn't publish it in the records till 8 years later so it becomes very hard to track.
Email Silvia at St Catherines Church in Alexandria - heliopolis@vic-egypt.org
She'll find the record in a matter of minutes. You can ask to have it scanned at a small cost... from memory about $5 a scan or you can ask for a certificate which costs a bit more.
The scan will just be of the record in the church books in either Latin or Italian.
Speak to Silvia first but she doesn't like going back and forwards with different names every other day so if there's multiple questions or records you want then get them done as a whole to make it easier for everyone.

Re: WHERE to obtain an Italian birth record from Alexandria, Egypt if it can not found in Italy?
Good afternoon,
Thank you for your response and help, it greatly appreciated.
We have now had 2 searches completed by the Brindisi commune (town hall) in Italy and both times have said there is no details recorded for my father-in-law unfortunately. They did however have his parent's 1918 marriage from Alexandria, Egypt noted on his father's birth certificate.
We went ourselves to search the Brindisi State Archives for any records/transcriptions connected to my father-in-law from Alexandria, Egypt. We unfortunately didn't find anything recorded/transcribed for him as the 1932-1934 birth record books where missing from the archives and nothing was recorded for him in the 1935/36/37 birth record books.
The only information we found from the Brindisi state archives was the recorded transcriptions from Alexandria, Egypt of his parents marriage (1918) and the eldest sister's birth transcription (b.1919, transcribed 1920 Brindisi). We also could not find any records/transcriptions on my father-in-laws eldest brother's birth from the 1920's.
Thank you so much for providing that email address for St Catherine's church in Alexandria, Egypt. I have emailed the church (on a different email address) a couple of times and never had a response. I will get in contact with Silvia and enquire for information on my father-in-law, thank you again.
Kind regards

Re: WHERE to obtain an Italian birth record from Alexandria, Egypt if it can not found in Italy?
Contact Silvia and she will get it sorted but if you have any issues just let me know and I'll help out.
Getting back to Federico Veste... I assuming you know his name was Luigi?.
This is the marriage record in Brindisi of Luigi Veste and Lucrezia Salsedo - https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 50/0ZNZOpe
Very strange why they didn't notify the consulate of Salvatore's birth... anyway, contact the church and they'll have all the answers.

I know this is off track Amos but here is the death record of Luigi's brother Salvatore in Brindisi 1931 - he was 56 years old. https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 01/Lpgym2o
Re: WHERE to obtain an Italian birth record from Alexandria, Egypt if it can not found in Italy?
Good morning,
I've now emailed Silvia, so I'll let you know when she gets back to me. Thank you again.
Thank you for sharing those documents/links with me. I'll just clarify some details as I believe I have made a mistake with names on my first post unfortunately.
My father-in-law's father was Luigi Lorenzo Veste NOT Federico Veste as I have mistakenly stated (If you know how I can edit that post please let me know).
That marriage record is for my father-in-law's parents: 'Luigi Lorenzo Veste' & 'Lucrezia Maria Salsedo'. The record was transcriped in Brindisi, Italy January 1919 after their marriage in August 1918 in Alexandria, Egypt.
My father-in-law's eldest brother's name is 'Federico Veste' (unsure of a middle name). We do know this as my sister-in-law met him as a child and we have photos of him and his son. He would have been born around 1923/24/25 we expect as my father-in-law Salvatore always told his children that Federico was 10 years older than him. We believe Federico Veste passed away in the mid 90's, possibly in Rome, Italy.
The death record of that 'Salvatore Veste' is the brother of Luigi Lorenzo Veste, my father-in-law's dad. That 'Salvatore' was my father-in-law's uncle, he was born in Brindisi in 1875 to his father 'Federico Veste' and mother 'Maria Cristina Durante', and those names are on that record. Thank you for this record, I have the details from Brindisi but no picture or Italian ancestry link of the document yet, so I greatly appreciate that.
Again, thank you very much for those records/links. I apologise for the mix up of the name and greatly appreciate your help.
Kind regards
