Itri family from Castellabate, Salerno

Post by FrankEtro »

My name is Francis Etro, Jr second son to Francis Pasquale Etro whos father was Vincenzo (James) Itri (Etro). Many family stories as to the name change from Itri to Etro none of which I have been able to verify.

I believe I have exhausted records from Ancestry and MyHeritage that I have been gathering information from and would like to go back as far as I can with the Itri branch of the my tree. Believing that it is rooted in Italy.

I have been able to trace the Itri side of my fathers family through MyHeritage.com and Ancestry.com and New York City records in the United States; however, I am not able to go further or verify information that I have found by reference in Italy.

My great grandfather. Francesco Palo Itri born Santa Maria di Castellabate, Salerno (August 10, 1867) his wife (married Dec 7, 1891) Caterina DiMatteo, born in Santa Maria di Castellabate, Salerno (Circa 1869) and had one child (my grandfather) Vincenzo Itri born October 4, 1892 also in Santa Maria di Castellabate, Salerno.

Francesco immigrated to USA and arrived at Ellis Island July 6, 1892. Caterina immigrated with Vincenzo arriving at Ellis Island September 7, 1895. I am not able to find any records in NEW York City for Caterina; however, we know she had died shortly after coming to America. From family stories, Francesco may have left Vincenzo with a brother who had come to America earlier. It is believed that he may have brought his wife back to Italy as he crossed back to Italy returning to America alone. It is assumed that Caterina passed away and may have been buried in Castellabate.

Based upon Francesco's citizenship papers, second marriage certificate and death certificate, without any other verification we have found that his father was Vincenzo Itri, born in Santa Maria di Castellabate (August 25, 1840) and married Theresa Garlucci August 30, 1864 in Santa Maria di Castellabate. We believe she was born Nov 13,1843 also in Santa Maria di Castellabate. Together they had sons Giuseppe, Francesco, Domenicantono, Bernardo, and Gennnaro, daughters Irene,Virgilia, and Marianna.

We believe Vincenzo's farther was Giuseppe Itri Born 1808 Santa Maria di Castellabate, his wife Irene Agresti.

Possibly Giuseppe father was Vincenzo Rito Itri and his mother was Marianna Tabasco.

I am trying to find and gather verification and additional information as well as leads to go further out on the tree. Any information, suggestions, leads, sites is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
