Gibellina Parish Records

Post by rlw254 »

Does anybody have access to the church records in Gibellina, Trapani? I am trying to locate someone named either Lauria Catanzaro, or Lucia Mangiaracina, who would have been born there some time around 1760. Parents would be Francesco and Agata. Thanks for any help.

Will be in Gibellina some in early February. Hoping I can get access to records, but we'll see. The pastor is elusive!

I would greatly appreciate a peek if you do happen to get a chance to review the registers. The situation is a little strange but I can elaborate so you have as much info as I do:

Calogero Messana (c.1749) & wife Lauria Catanzaro had children in Caltanissetta:
Francesco Messana c.1787 - 23 Sept 1827
Salvatore Messana c.1789 - 23 May 1824
Michele Messana c.1792 - 3 May 1834
Lucio Messana c.1796 - 15 June 1806
Silvestro Messana c.1799 - 17 Sept 1809
Raffaela Messana c.1801 - 13 Nov 1805

Mother on all death and marriage records for these children says Lauria Catanzaro. I have no birth records for these children because I think the church they attended (San Giovanni) does not have digitized baptism records.

Lauria Catanzaro herself died in Caltanissetta 15 Oct 1831 listed as age 70 and gives parents Francesco & Agata (no surname). Birthplace on her death record indicates Caltanissetta but I don't think this is correct.

I have found no marriage record for Calogero Messana & Lauria Catanzaro but I do see a marriage in the church of San Giovanni on 9 Feb 1783 between Calogero Messana & Lucia Mangiaracina, where Lucia's parents are listed as Francesco & Agata and she is from Gibellina. No Catanzaro or Mangiaracina births can be found in Caltanissetta in the relevant time period, presumably ~1750-1765. I am wondering if these are the same person. Finding a baptism record for one name (or both) would help steer in the right direction.

Just got to Sicily. Will see if I can get access while I am here. Only here 17 days and a lot of tasks on the agenda.

Adding to this. Hoping to find a contact to get records for gibellina parish too.

My ancestors are Paolo Giovenco (1856) and Anna Tortorici (1868) They had a child there around 1886 named Joseph. Trying to find out if their marriage records or birth records are there.
