Soggia Family who married Hebridean Soldier in Padova

Post by DebbieBozkurt »

Hello

I am doing the family tree for a friend and her Grandfather Murdo MacDonald married a Laura Soggia whilst in the Army in Padova/Padua 1946. We have the wedding certificate and states father, Giovanni Soggia, Bargeman. We know Laura birth was in 1925 and we believe her mother was called Antonietta Tommasin. Murdo brought his bride back to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Laura did keep in touch with her family but my friend has tried contacting distant cousins via social media but have had nothing back on her familie's history, I found Giovanni Soggi on the registration of foreigners and German Persecutees which gave his birth as 4 October 1897. My German is very poor but I think he was possibly working on the railways. I have tried all the sites to find a marriage or a birth, anything to allow me to go further back and there appears to be nothing available for Padova. Is there anyone that can help me please, have experience in Eastern European family history but don't really know where to go from now on Italian family history. Thanks Debbie

Does the marriage certificate say where exactly was Laura born?

Thanks you so much I thought I tried but obviously not hard enough - will look and see if there is anything else I can find. The marriage certificate doesn't state Laura place of birth, it is a UK Airforce certificate. It says Laura was a chambermaid and her residence at time of marriage was Pitro Cossa, 9, Padua - not sure if that is where she worked or the family home

Thank you so much, this means so much to us to fill in the gaps. My friend found lots of hand written notes about the immediate family today but nothing past her Granny Laura parents. Other than Laura's granny fell off a roof before she was born. I am going to try and get the 1956 document translated as there feels more going on, why did they marry 30 years after Laura was born.

Thank you so much

Thank you Mmogna you are great, much appreciated. I have done some research on the area and it appears the early Soggia lived in Pontelongo which the river Bacchiglione runs through and the later lived in the Brentella Canal area, so likely they were generations of bargeman working the navigation systems. Whether they were living on Barges like they did in Victorian England I don’t know. Still researching the area and the history.

After reading through the notes that were made on the Soggia family, the mother Antonetta Thomasine/Tommasine had 4 children, 1 not Soggai’s so we are led to believe; Armado Thomasine b. 1921, Laura Soggia b. 1925, Lucia Soggia b. 1931 and Umberta Soggia b. 1934. Since Giovanna and Antonetta never married until 1956, I don’t know what surname was used to register birth. There was mention of another child born to Antonetta Thomasine in 1910 Giovanan Thomasine but can not hers as Antonetta birth date on the notes said Dec 1899 so would have been 10. All the four births we had noted they all said Antonetta worked in toy factory – perhaps the famous mechanical toy factory in Padua.

We think her mother may have been Theresa Masacato or Masucto as there is a note that granny of Laura Soggia fell of a roof before she was born – assume that Theresa married an Thomasine – seems a popular name in Padua, but can not find any relevant documents, think spelling is wrong.
Again thank you so much for your help

Birth record #24 for Antonio Soggia at Pontelongo (Padova). Birth on 13 Jun 1810. Father: Angelo. Mother: Antonia Fusaro, wife of Angelo.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 68/5YYo8el
Another possible father of Luigi.

The INGAP toy factory was opened in 1919. So it is possible that Antonietta Tommasin worked there.

The surname Masacato or Masucto does not exist. It could be Mazzucato. Can you post the documents you use as sources? There may be reading errors.

MACDONALD ELVIRA LAURA 92 TOMMASIN F 2018 Stornoway

That is nan's death index, just looked it up and no where did my friend say the name Elvira came into it. All I got which I will attach is my friends notes she took from her granny before she died when she was 90. Apologies it is very scribbled. We think it was actually Antonetta Thomasine father who fell off a roof of a chemist (according to her gran he was a heavy drinker and they were scared of him) and left his wife a widow Theresa Masacato (spelt wrong?).

The middle bit on the Soggia is the more modern part that we know more about but thought would just attach the notes, in full not sure how helpful that would be.

Thanks again
