Caputi/Caputo family search

Post by mOja-Caputi »

Hello!! I’ve recently became interested in my ancestry. My grandfather and his whole family is Italian, but unfortunately they’re all dead so I cannot ask them for information. I feel like I have searched all over the web and I have come up almost completely empty. I know my great grandfathers name is Giuseppe Caputi (03/10/1896-09/16/1988), he was married to Loretta A Romano (07/15/1898-08/01/1969). I have found a few ancestors of Loretta but have not gotten very far with Giuseppe. I found his birth certificate from Italy, it says he was born in Grumento Nova to a Vincenzo Caputi and Raffaella Friguglietti but that is the only records I have that speak of his parents. My cousin suspects that Vincenzo’s father may be a man called Don Francesco Paolo Caputi but I can find no records of him either. I am at a loss and would appreciate any help if people have tips or advice for me as I’m fairly new to this.

Welcome to the forum!!!

Based on the information you have given me here, according to the birth certificate you have, that your Giuseppe Caputi's parents were Vincenzo Caputi and Raffaella Fruguglietti, to start you off, I have located Vincenzo and Raffaella's Marriage Record which give information about each of their parents and takes you back further. Vincenzo's father's name was Giuseppe Caputi not Don Francesco Paolo:

1887 Marriage No 6: Vincenzo Caputi and Raffaella Fruguglietti
Saponara di Grumento (today known as Grumento Nova): 21 March 1887

Groom: Vincenzo Caputi, 24 yo (born c.1863), musicante (musician), born and residing in Saponara di Grumento, - son of the deceased Giuseppe Caputi, and of the deceased Maria Romaso, who had both lived in this town when living.

Bride: Raffaella Fruguglietti, 20 yo, cucitrice, born and residing this town, daughter of Giuseppe and of Rosolia Pricolo, both residing in this town of Saponara di Grumento.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... =en&i=1772

Marriage Pubblication No 6:
Bride’s parents: Giuseppe Fruguglietti was 48 yo (c.1839), guardiano rurale (rural guard), Rosolia Pricolo, no age given, was a contadina (peasant/farmer), both living.

There is a thread here about the occupation “guardiano rural” that may interest you: https://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/ ... no#p311825

Here's your Giuseppe's birth record, just in case you wanted a better copy of it:

1896 Birth No 16: Giuseppe Caputi

Registered SDG: 12 March 1896

Appearing before the official was Vincenzo Caputi, 34 yo, musicante (musician), living in this town. He reported that at 8.30 am on 10th of the current month, in the house in Via Mancoso/Mancuso, No 136, from Raffaella Fruguglietti, his legitimate wife, na Sarta (dressmaker), living with him, was born a baby boy, who he presented to the official, and gave the name of Giuseppe.

(In the records the surname is sometimes spelt Caputo, and the street name varies with Mancoso/Mancuso.)

Last one:

1812 Death No 3: Teresa Favale
She was only 30 when she died and unfortunately it doesn’t give the name of her parents. It just says she was the wife of Vito di Vietri. She died on 6 January 1812 not the 7th.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 31/Lor13BX

(Sadly, 6 yo son Angelo Antonio di Vietri died on 8 January 1812. His is the next record No 4.)

Ciao, Angela-

Just wanted to to say you are AWESOME - even if a person who posts here looking for info doesn't say the same. I've posted this several times here over the years before, but it is just so unbelievably bizarre (in a sad - almost rude - sort of way) how sometimes people ask for something "free" here, and then just disappear. This, after altruistic helpers like you (and so many others like T, mmogno, pippo, etc.) give tremendous help in answering ancestral unsolved mysteries. I mean, just "brava" to you...

To be perfectly clear, I really don't care if someone comes back later on, reads this, and is offended by my comments. Yes, some time has passed since the original posting and your recent responses (more than 2 weeks) and life gets in the way. Things happen. But don't open your hand for help and then just walk way. As stated, IMO, it's not only rude, but quite selfish.

I apologize for "going off", but I just cannot suffer ungrateful people. Keep doing what you're doing. Like many others here, you are a gem, plain and simple.

Wow!!! Thank you, Mark. I really appreciate and am encouraged by your kind words and support, and I do totally get what you are saying, as I’m sure do others.

I’d say that mOja-Caputi had to wait a couple of weeks for his/her “first post” to be approved. I only saw their post yesterday when there seemed to be a few new people who had their first posts approved, so there may have been a backlog of people waiting for clearance. Anyways, I hope mOja-Caputi sees my research to date and finds it helpful. I’m always happy to help people in their journey to find their Italian roots, when I have the time.

Thank you for sticking your neck out here, Mark, and for making a stand. It takes courage and conviction.

Kind regards always,
Angela

Hi Mylee

Lovely to meet you. I am so happy to help. My father was born and bred in the town, and because my maternal grandparents lived there, my mother spent a lot of her childhood there as well, so I have researched the town many times before, just not lately. I always enjoy getting back to home turf. It’s my “happy place”. I only posted two days ago, and I suspected you had to wait a while to have your first post approved, so no worries at all. (Some people never come back.)

So I’ve basically just worked on Vincenzo Caputi’s ancestry. There’s a bit of a hitch with Raffaella Fruguglietti’s ancestry because I can’t locate her parent’s marriage record which would take us back further. (I suspect they were married in 1864, but those marriage records are missing, but years ago I did manage to locate most of the names of the spouses married that year, using Processetti (marriage attachments) but there were about seven marriage packages missing. Anyways, I have located the details from Rosolia Pricolo’s Death Record, which gives me the names of her parents to be Giuseppe Pricolo and Arcangiola Di Tommaso, and most importantly her husband is noted as the deceased Giuseppe Fruguglietti, which confirms that Giuseppe and Arcangiola are the correct parents. (Pricolo is a very popular name in Grumento Nova so it’s important that everythings matches.) Finding Rosolia Pricolo’s death record also gives me a time frame to locate Giuseppe Fruguglietti’s death record, which will include the name of his parents, and his wife’s name. So, watch this space. It may or may not be today.

Hello again Angela!
Thank you so so very much! I can't even begin to express how amazed I am! All that information you already found me is way more than I expected. This is honestly so awesome I have been stuck for so long. Thank you so much for looking further into it, you didn't have to do that. I am so happy to now have this information! I never thought I would be able to see past my great grandfather so this is actually really cool. Thank you again for the updates and I will keep my eye out for your replies!

I'm glad "all is well" here. Honestly, I didn't realize that it could take so long for a post to be approved, so I sincerely apologize (to Mylee) if my post was "impatient" (ignorant of such things). Regardless, great things are happening here (ancestral discoveries) and I'm really glad that Mylee has so much to work off of now. Also, that Angela is involved. Like several other stalwarts here, she is very helpful. And I, too, have a connection with Saponara di Grumento (well, via my "better" half), so I admit that I do take keen interest in such posts!

Carry on!!! :D

Hi Mark

Yes, when things are really busy for people, admins etc, it can take ages to get that first post to be approved. I'm pretty sure everyone involved in keeping things running here are all volunteers and have family, work and other commitments to take care of.

Keep a watch here, you may discover a new in law on the next post or two.
