Captain Giovanni Anfossi from Varese

I'm looking to try to trace records for an Italian Captain - Geovanni Anfossi from Varese. He was a young man in 1933 when he arrived in Tianjin, China on bord the Italian naval vessel LEPANTO. I believe he was the Commandant of the garrison in the Italian concession and came from a titled family. He features in an unpublished book - a family history - written by my aunt (sadly now deceased). Can anyone advise where is the best place to start my search?
