Help please with surname Carpi

It seems I have gained insight but also hit another brick wall. After extensive research I have finally found my gg grandfathers father. His name being Alessandro Carpi, my gf was born in 1880 in parma emilia-romagna. Around the same time frame between 1877 upto i believe late 1890's Alessandro is listed as the father of many more children. Am I wrong in thinking that he may have run a church or possibly a synagogue. Any help or insight would be appreciated!
