Genealogist Recommendations or Advice? (Seeking Records from Orta Nova, 1684–1697)

Post by CaptainCatholic »

Hi everyone! I’m searching for baptism, marriage, or death records from Orta Nova (formerly Orta dei Gesuiti) between 1684–1697! Unfortunately, I'm not having much luck!

At the time, Orta was fully controlled by the Jesuits, who ran the church Santa Maria delle Grazie, built in 1645. A baptismal font from that church still exists today, proving sacraments were performed there. But when the Jesuits were expelled in 1767, their documents were scattered across various archives — some to Rome, some possibly lost or misfiled.

Here’s what I’ve already done:

-Contacted the diocesan archives of Troia, Cerignola, and Ascoli Satriano — all confirmed they don’t hold pre-1774 Orta records.

-Reached out to the Jesuit Archives in Rome (ARSI) and explored the Jesuit fund in the State Archives of Naples (there are some possible records in Naples, but the funds are not yet ordered sadly!)

I believe these records must exist somewhere, just not where they’re expected to be!

Does anyone have:

1) A recommendation for a genealogist experienced in tracking down Jesuit or pre-1774 Southern Italian records?

2) Advice on other places to look?

Thank you so much for any help!
Tony

You can try Giovanni Maria Ammassari.
He is based in Apulia, though not exactly in that area, so maybe he can help.
I don't know about his fees, but he is very accurate.
I know him (not personally) for his cooperation to the Italian genealogy site www.tuttogenealogia.it
Here are his contacts:
