Help with 1950 Census Record

Post by darkerhorse »

For this 1950 Census record, I need:

for line 23, Vincent Cottone: street name (Putnam?), occupation/industry (assistant varnish clerk/paint?)

for line 23, Michael Guarino: occupation/industry (junior transfer clerk/freight?)

Cottone address is 138-17 Whitelaw St (structure still stands). The 9000 #'s are Pitkin Ave. Occupations seem correct, word after freight appears as "fwdg" or forwarding. Don't know what a "varnish clerk" may have been, but they were different times back then...

So, the one listing for Pitkin interrupted the listings on Whitelaw?

I can't wait for the 1960 Census to see if he made head varnish clerk.

Apparently. I've seen it on other census pages. I think it's just the route the census taker took. You've got a bit of a wait for 1960...

The address at the top of the sheet is 9016 Albert Road, followed by 9026 Pitkin Avenue. Pitkin resumes below with number 9044. What census-takers do/did is return (out of sequence) to houses where no one was home (or answered) during the first pass. The address 9016 Albert Road (technically 90-16) is not to be found today on Google Maps; it seems that houses constructed since 1950 occupy a portion of Albert Road that no longer exists.
