Toscano family

Post by bobtoni »

My name is Rober Toscano.

I want to find more information about my grandfather's family. My grandfather was Michele Toscano. He was born on October 31, 1887 in Grumento Nova. His father's name was Francesco Toscano and his mother's name was Rosalia Rago. Attached is a copy of his birth certificate. My grandfather emigrated to the Los Banos, California. I do not know if he had any siblings or whether or not any of them emigrated to the United States as he did. Any assistance that you can provide is really appreciated.

Hello bobtoni.
Welcome and apologies for the late reply but you post only came up to view today.

Michele Toscano was born on 31 July 1886 as stated on the act you posted and confirmed by the original one.

Farassino did the heavy lifting up front and deserves the most credit, but you're welcome...

I should add here that you're probably related to my better half, albeit distantly. I seem to recall that she, too, had a Rago relative that landed in Los Banos, CA. I need to revisit when I have more time, but even in my saying that, I also caution here that your Rago Tree isn't showing me any collateral connection yet (let alone direct ones)...

Oh, as to that "tree" comment, I've done a very rough (handwritten) version of what I have so far (again, with a tip of my cap to Farassino). I've also found Rosalia's Birth Record which I've posted here...

RAGO Rosalia Atti di Nascita (16 May 1856)(No. 56)(di Antonio and di SARAPO Maddalena).jpg

Kind regards

Just to add a slight twist to the story.

I'm understanding that Francesco Toscano was a widower when he married Rosolia Rago in 1881. He was previously married to Maria Agrazia Carmela La Salvia, 30 yo, daughter of deceased Giuseppe La Salvia and Teresa Pricolo. They married in 1857 when Francesco was 25: Marriage No 29: https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... Kl?lang=en Page 30 of 56

His father Nicola had died already, while Teresa Bove, his mother, was still living,
It is strange that it doesn’t mention that he was a widower in his 1881 marriage record, but it does mention his deceased wife Maria La Salvia in the Marriage Pubblication, at the base of the record. She had died on 18 April last.
Pubblication No 7: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043547

So, I think that there might be a few of Michele's half syblings to search for as well.

BTW: Great work guys. Just my 2 cents here - I'm trying to stick to translations these days as my time is limited.

Grazie Angela.

I thought that Francesco could have been married before having seen the age difference but did not investigate further.
Good job that you did.

And thank you Mark……

@Farassino

Happy to help. I know what you are saying about Francesco's age. I'm pleased that the Pubblication mentioned his first wife's death.

I am curious to see if there were children from Francesco's and Maria La Salvia's marriage? Is is possible to search the records for that information?

Thanks, Robert

Nice finds by Angela...

Although I haven't been able to locate Nicola's Death record (there are two in the intervening years between 1832 and 1855 - one from 1836 and one from 1854 - but each time the decedent's spouse didn't show as Teresa Bove), as to Angela's 1st marriage find, I've found at least one birth from the Francisco Toscano-Maria La Salvia union:

Carmela Toscano, b: 10 Apr 1861

Unfortunately, Carmela died as a 7-month old (15 Nov 1861)...

... but then another daughter was later born in 1865 (19 Jul). Also named Carmela...
