Late first marriage?
Late first marriage?
Reasons for why a woman would have not married until she was 28? This is in Porto Empedocle, Agrigento. I need to find when her other sisters married, but 1 married aged 16 which is quite different.
Re: Late first marriage?
Have you got her marriage certificate?

Re: Late first marriage?
Do you know the parent's death dates with the relationship to her marriage..? It's possible she took on responsibility of caring for the elders prior to marrying...

At the time of her marriage, the bride's father was deceased and her mother was living.

It's also possible they were just late bloomers or maybe not as desirable as those who married younger. No intense offended.
Re: Late first marriage?
I don't think desirable mattered in those days - parents usually arranged the marriage. You can't reject because brides ugly.darkerhorse wrote: 18 Oct 2025, 23:57 It's also possible they were just late bloomers or maybe not as desirable as those who married younger. No intense offended.

You may be right. It was just a thought. But I don't think all marriages were "arranged" by parents then (1900?).
Re: Late first marriage?
Thats true, parents probably by then let the child pick a spouse, but I assume would have arranged something if they remained unmarried too long.

Re: Late first marriage?
My grandparent's marriage was "arranged" by the families. They were married in 1922 -- my grandfather had been in the US for 12 years (my grandmother was 7 when he emigrated) & he was already a US citizen...

I wish I knew more about my ancestors - but the same is probably tree for them on arranged marriages. I once read a story about a couple in Sicily who fell in love, parents refused the match, and they ran away to America with some money he saved - I hope somewhere in my genealogy such a sweet thing happened.
