The birth record for Katherine shows her birth place as Hepzibah, same as on the draft card posted by jcsm. Shows wife and two children which also checks based on the 1920 census. Birthplace San Giovanni in Fiore. Looks pretty good.

And the 1930 census listed by vj matches info supplied by JimmySal and other census and birth record details.

Other info worth searching for:

Marriage record for Sal and Maria

The 1910 WV census records for Salvatore Iaquinto and Maria Oliverio. Maria's father listed as Francesco on her ship manifest (if it's the correct one).

1910 Census Record for Francesco Oliverio to see if we can locate Maria's mother's first name. Ship manifest for Maria showed closed relative as her grandmother Rosa ? (can anybody decipher the surname?) so it's likely her mother was already in the states or deceased.

Francesco Oliverio's ship manifest

Francesco's wife's ship manifest

Biff83, that Katherine is definitely my grandmother, that is her exact birthday.(3/15/1916)
:D Nice Work :D
Can anybody tell if Samual Iaquinto, head of family on 1930 census record was an alien or naturalized under citizenship column.
Thank You

Blow up of 1930 Naturalization column...
Naturalized?

I see Pa

Also, It appears from Salvatore's manifest that some
inquiry was made possibly relating to a filing for
naturalization. The date? seems to be crossed-off
with only the note '505' left.

505 = Form 505 - Arrival Information.
Certification of arrival, often a step in the
naturalization process designed to prevent
fraud

VJ, thanks for enlarging that. I'll try to find more info on his citizenship status from my family. I'll keep you guys posted.
Biff83, I talked to my uncle and he thinks Maria Oliverio's mother's maiden name was Barbara Allevato. I'm not a 100% sure that is correct.

If that's the correct Francesco Oliverio, I found a ship manifest from 1899 that shows a Francesco Oliverio, age 41, from San Giovanni in Fiore going to Watson? WV to join brother Giuseppe. However, there are a number of other possible candidates with varying birth years based on age at arrival. In doing my search I also found other individuals from the same town many of whom were showing final destination as WV. In addition, it looks like a number of the males were "birds of passage" who made multiple trips back to Italy.

JimmySal, if you'd like to find out out some information on coal mining in West Virginia during the time your family lived there, here's a link. I've found putting my grandparents in an historical context gives me a much greater appreciation of all they sacrificed for their children and ultimately myself.

Hi Jimmy......
he thinks Maria Oliverio's mother's maiden name was Barbara Allevato.
Your fathers recollection of the name ALLEVATO could be a further clue to look into:

This manifest shows a Salvatore Iaquinto joining a nephew Allevato in Fairmont, as well as two other Iaquintos, one joining a brother Salvatore,
another joining her husband Allevato......

You do need to be careful, there are MANY Iaquintos from the SAME town, going to the SAME place, and with a REPETITION of the SAME names....same thing with the OLIVERIOS.....I noticed this going thru the birth, marriage and death records.....There are two Sam Iaquintos as noted by the draft records......but you at least know the town of origin as I tried to point out with the first draft finding........

Agreed we do need feedback on this and on Maria Oliverio's ship manifest posted previously. JimmySal's been pretty consistent about verifying and providing information. I'm sure he'll post later.

See..all the little bits he remembers seem to yielding results..may not be the correct result but thats what research is. Taking a clue and following it through until you can't find anymore and you're satisfied with the answers.
