Italian Passport Records
Italian Passport Records
Does anyone know where one (the public) can obtain certified copies of Italian passport records?
My grandfather and grandmother came to the U.S. separately in 1920 and I would like to obtain their records as I do not have their passports.
Thanks.

Re: Italian Passport Records
I asked this question aweek ago and was told they were not available. I also learned that passports may not have been necessary. Never received detailed reply.

Thanks for the info. I have looked through this book, but for some reason it does not give any addresses to obtain the passports through the ministry of internal affairs.
If any one knows that would be helpful.

Obtaining passport info is very difficult, could be kept at two locations, two levels of goverment, and was not neccesary depending on time frame.

According to the department of state, passports were required to enter US after WW1 in 1920, which is when my grandparents entered separately.
Re: Italian Passport Records
If you have the copy of the ship manifest that your grandparents came on it may have a notation on it with a passport number..or it may even have it type written on it.
If thats the case maybe you could request the info under the Freedom of Information Act? Not sure who you would need to contact..maybe your local passport office could direct you..or a Government Office.
I think the problems with issuing copies of passports would be all the identity theft out there so they may not release the info..then again they may.
I'm sorry I don't have any specific answer but these are some some thoughts/suggestions.

Re: Italian Passport Records
Thanks for the address! I've checked out the site, but can't seem to find a main address to write the Rome office instead of the provincial ones. Am I missing it?
Re: Italian Passport Records
My great grandmother brought my grandmother to the US from Italy in 1920. I found a copy of my great grandmother's passport, so I'm guessing they were required. Sorry I cannot be of more help on this.
Re: Italian Passport Records
Maybe this site can help you? Immigration records (and other records) could be requested under the FOIA.

Re: Italian Passport Records
You can try to send a request to civil record office or to provincial archive of the area they came from, maybe they have a copydrovedo wrote:Does anyone know where one (the public) can obtain certified copies of Italian passport records?
