tHIS IS PROMISING PROVIDED YOU TELL ME MORE! There are presently 31 persons surnamed Cerchi in the Toscana region of which Livorno is a part. Livorno is the cap;ital of the province of Livorno and there are none in that province but there are others in the region of Toscana. If you know for certain that Livorno City is the town of origin and not the nbeighboring villages since in Italy all records are housed where you were born or resided. I will look into the sailking on the Herschel and you get back tome wioth with what you know. In the final analysis you can always send one generic letter to all 31 for information. Peter

The Herschel made several sailings from Hamburg to Oz from 1872 thru 1878 but none in 1875 and I did not come across any manifest. Have you people come up with one? Peter

Thank you Peter for your replys, The only info I have on Luigi is that he was born about 1856 and that the Herschel sailed from Hamberg on 27 June 1875 and landed in Wellington ,New Zealand on 23 oct. 1875. sorry I can offer no further Info . Other members of family have tried to track down Luigi over the years but this is as far as we have got. Your idea of generic letters is a good one but I dont speak any Italian. thanking u again. May I ask what the source is for wellington arrivalof the Herschel?? I have.between 1872 and 1878, the ports of arrival from hamburg as Maryborough, Queensland,Bowen,Brisbane and Port Adelaide. My geography of OZ isn\'t that great so I must be off somewhere. In any event, the english language is secondary in the shcools in Italy and a simply written english letter would suffice. Peter
