Italian Military
Re: Italian Military
Wow Nuccia! How awesome! Trouble is I don't really know what part of Naples my Grandfather was born. I'm sure I can get some interesting records from Avellino on my Grandmother. I'll check with my Dad about where my Grandfather was born exactly.

Sounds good. Let us know how we can help you track down any additional info, ok?
For Napoli in general I think you can request his records here..
Archivio di Stato Provincia di Napoli Piazzetta Grande Archivio 5 80100 Napoli, Italia
I may know of a few other sites but I can't get them at the moment. If you want, I can link them later.

Hi all, Nuccia,
I noticed that you wrote to Rita about sending a letter with a self addressed envelope etc. Is it better to go through the mail or email when you are requesting the Italian military records?
I am going to ask for my grandfathers records from Campobasso, they are from Bonefro and I have exact birthdays for them. I would like to search for my greatgrandfathers too, do I need just the year or do I need month and date too?
How many should I request at once? I don't want to get greedy and yet if they are already looking for me I would like to ask for all four. Are they usually free or do you pay them later?

Nuccia,
Do you send for birth records and military records from the same office in Italy?

You send for the birth, marriage and death records from the comuni of the towns they were from.rg1905 wrote:Nuccia,

You write away for the military papers from the State Archives.
Its always helpful if you give as much information as you can when writing away for anything. The people working in these offices are very busy and the easier you make their search, the better the chances of you getting a reply. Also, when requesting birth, marriage or death records, be sure to ask a copy of the actual act or you will only receive a certificate. The difference between the two? The act will supply you with much more info..and you will also get the names of the persons parents, ages, professions. It may even include a grandfathers name for each of the parents and if they were living or dead at the time of the child's birth. Birth certificates sometimes have marriage info or death notations on them as well.
I requested two copies of military records, one for my grandfather, and one for my great uncle. What I received for my uncle was a copy of the actual Draft Registration. The did not/could not provide me with his military records..
For my grandfather, I received the Draft Card Registration and the actual Military Document. Both list parents names and area of birth, birth date as well as other personal details (height, eye color, hair color, etc).
Definitely worth sending away for...
Hope I've answered all the questions.

Re: Italian Military
Oh..its definitely better to mail your request than it is to email it..emails often bounce back..sometimes days later and you're never really sure they get the request anyway.littleapple wrote:Hi all, Nuccia,

They will let you know if there is a charge for the records. Don't send any money up front, but you might want to send International Reply Coupons if you choose not to send the stamps so that they can cash them in for stamps. Some office clerks though do not know how to use them so you may have to explain how to them.
Include in your letter to offer to pay any expenses..
There are standard form letters available on the internet to write away for requests but be careful..some sites only have letters that request certificates and not the acts.

Hi Nuccia,
I found the addresses I needed for Avellino and some sample letters in Italian to request documents. I think it will be better to use than a Free Translation Website like I sent you.
Thanks anyway,
Rita

Melina,
You should tape and write down the stories that your father remembers of your grandfather's experiences, as well as your father's. Think of passing it down to family and to others too.
