The surname Italian dictionary finds the base name to be Gilli and variations such as Gillo gillio gili di gilio zilli, zillio as well as alternations and derivations as Giletto, gilioli, zilioli zilotti zilocchi etc etc. The Z surname are venetian in origin and the rest in Northern Italy. The surname appeared frerquently in the 12th and 13th century which oddly enopugh influenced french surnames gilles, gille. gile. There are presnelty 31 Gillia in Italy with 90% in the Piemonte region and the majority in the province of Torino. Peter
