Requirement to emmigrate?

Post by lilbees »

Curious, when my great grandfather came to the US for a visit in 1910 was he required to file a document requesting permission to travel? If so would that document be available today. Where would I request it?

Thanks,

Hi.
I'm doing the same research...

The passport to came in Usa from Italy, now as in 1910, had to be requested at the local "QUESTURA" department of "POLIZIA AMMINISTRATIVA".
Now those historical files are conserved at the "Archivi di Stato".
Every italian "provincia" has one of it.
Her you can find the directory, click on the town:

Some documents are on line, but very few:

Try to contact them by email or letter (in Italian).

If your GGfather was from a big town, as Naples, you have greater probabilities to find something interesting, because they have bigger archives.

Good Luck!
