Pietro Novembre

Post by pnovembre »

In order to establish Italian citizenship, I believe that I need acertified copy of my grandfather's birth certificate. I have been told that he was born in Bari Italy on 18 July 1880. Can anyone help me confirm the exact place and date of birth and obtain a birth certificate?

Welcome to the Forum!
In order to locate a birth record in Italy, you’ll need to know
the exact town in which your grandfather was born.
Bari is not only a town, but a province in Italy.
Do you have any of his US records? Sometimes his
naturalization paperwork or ship’s manifest will give an
exact town.

Valarie,

Thanks for the quick reply. I realize that Bari is a province, but I don't know how to narrow it from there. On his draft registrations in 1918 and 1942, my grandfather listed only "Italy" as his place of birth. I found him on the manifest of the ship "Italia" landing at Castel Garden on 28 Jun 1906, but no birth place.

I'm still looking.

Valarie,

I've just checked the ships manifest shown in you reply. I'm pretty sure that that's him on line 23. It shows him joining a cousin named Onofrio. That was his father's name. So that might mean that the location of birth was Noci, (Bari, Puglia, Italy). That gets me a lot closer in only a few hours.

Any suggestions on where to go from here?

Thanks again, Pete

The Family History Center has the civil records (on microfilm) for Noci from 1809 to 1900. Here is the link.

Hey mj :D !
Great idea!

Pete, while you're waiting for your film to arrive at the Family History Center,
you may also want to try to write to Noci for Pietro's birth record.

Many thanks to vj and misbris!! I all the info I need to get started in only one day. You guys are great!!

I have the letter to Noci and am getting the film from Salt Lake. And I'm getting copies of my birth certificate and my father's from New York City. While I'm waiting, I need to find out more about the "Apostile"(spelling?).

Italysearcher has brought up the need to get a special(?) certificate for citizenship. What is this and how do I get it? My father's and my birth certificates are in New York City and my grandfathers Naturalization was in New York County. I assume that the procedure for all of these will be the same or similar. I beleive that I will still need to get my grandfather's birth certificate from Noci. Is there any way that I can get the records in the microfilm from the Family History Center certified?

Because I live in Colorado, I think that I have to apply to the consulate in Chicago. Does anyone have any suggestions on avoiding pitfalls particular to that consulate? From browsing the forum, it appears that requirements can vary from consulate to consulate and from time to time. Any help will be appreciated.

Again thanks for all the help so far. I'm really glad that i fiund this web site.

Pete
