Wait, if his Declaration of Intention was done in 1921, does that mean I do not qualify because he renounced his allegiance to his country? Oh no.

Just to wrap up some loose ends here, what is the general consensus of those who've gone through the process as to whether photocopies available on Footnote and elsewhere are acceptable as is to the Italian consulates? Also, is the oath as valid as the actual certificate for the jus sanguinus process? I really like that more of these documents are becoming available through various online services - a real boon to genealogists and family historians - but I am just wondering about their validity in the jus sanguinus process. Any evidence one way or the other?

Hi,

Does anyone know if the Declaration of Intent affects my ability to apply for Italian citizenship? I'm not sure if I should start the process! Thanks!

The declaration of intent is the first step in a long process towards naturalization. Many things can happen along that path. The only thing that matters to you is the date the oath of allegiance was taken. That's when your ancestor had to renounce his Italian citizenship, so that was the date after which he could no longer pass it along via jus sanguinus. Go for it.

Woo hoo!! Thanks! I'm definitely going to go for it. I'm also beginning to learn Italian. I wish my grandmother had taught me! Or even my mom. Such a beautiful language.

Good for you! You know, when I started this process seven months ago, I just had the idea of finding out more about my ancestors and maybe honoring my Italian heritage. But along the way I've picked up some language skills (still rudimentary) and learned some Italian history and started thinking about the nature of family and heritage, and somehow this has opened up a new path in life. I'm guessing this happens to many people. I hope you find many surprises along the way as you pursue your citizenship with an open heart.
