Looking for help for obtaining records on visits to churches

Post by MiriamA »

I have a trip planned within the next three months to Treviso, Veneto area. I have a list and addresses for four churches that I want to visit to get records from my ancestors. How to I go about it? Do I need to make appointments? Or only show up? Do I pay fees for each place? How do I obtain copies of the records found? Any additional guidance?

Write to the priest and let him know what day you will be in town and ask for a time to meet with him to search the records. If you don't get an answer (and you probably won't, but include an addressed envelope anyway) go to the church about 30 minutes before the mass and wait for the priest. He may be willing to stay afterwards to help. Make a donation (I suggest 5 euro for each record you find). Ask if you may take a digital photo without flash.
Make sure you ask first for the Stato delle Anime. They may not have one but if they do it will save a lot of time. Check the back and front of each volume for an index. (It may be in alphabetical order by first name.)
The older records may be held at the Curia, so you may want to write to them also.
Since you are going to be there in December remember Christmas is coming and the priests may be busier than usual. If this is the case, ask if the sacristan can look for the records at his convenience and send the photos to you. You might want to purchase a cheap camera for this purpose to leave with him along with an addressed envelop to yourself. Remember to offer to pay him, or make a donation to the church.
Good Luck.

In addition to the good advice Italysearcher provided you you might wish to consider whether the churches you plan to visit have a permanent priest in residence or is served by a circuit priest who travels from town to town (there is a shortage of priests in Italy.

You did not display the towns you plan on visiting so that I could screen the churches for telephone numbers indicating a priest in residence and in what church can he be found. If you go to www.parrocchie.it and put in the name of the town you will be visiting in the upper right a listing of the churches inthe town should come up with name, address and "telefono". Those churches without "telefono" may be closed and either not served by any priest or served itinerently (feast of name days). =Peter=

In addition, to all the great advice.

Be prepared to ask the Priest or person who answers the phone or door if the Parish has someone 'trusted' that has been designated to perform the search or who has been designated to accompany you while you research.

Thank you for the excellent guidance given. It is greatly appreciated.

I took notes, checked the parishes, and made contacts. I will now look into finding the "trusted person" for each parish. I am aware that in one of the parishes that I plan to visit, there is such a person. I did not think of asking for this contact. I will do it now. Thank you again for all the help.
