Can a family member translate?

Post by DeFilippis78 »

Once I finally get all my documents and they need to be translated into Italian, can a relative do that. My step father speaks Italian. Could he do it or does it need to be an official translator from the government

Where will you apply? Some consulates (such as New York City, last I heard) allow anyone to do the translations with the exception of divorce documents, presumably due to their complexity. Others require certified translators to be chosen from a list provided by the consulate.

I note the Philidelphia consulate does publish a list of translators, however it is not clear if they are required.

I have seen threads which indicate the Phili consulate will be closing soon. If so, you will probably be going to Washington, DC instead.

There is a consulate in Newark, NJ. That is probably where you have to go.

Your relative can translate the your documents only if he is a certified professional translator.
