passenger list ss canopic

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

passenger list ss canopic

Post by pwwinters »

I am getting nowhere in finding my grandmother's name on the ship she stated she traveled on in her naturalization papers. Any help anyone can give me would be so appreciated.
Lucia Grimaldi, b. 18 Jan 1892 (date varies by a day or two, but not the year) in San Severino, Italy, immigrated on 2 Oct 1904 on the SS Canopic, which I discovered arrived in Boston, though she lived afterwards in NYC. She should have been traveling with her mother and siblings, but not positive on that. Mother's name was Giovanna Grimaldi, b. 1870's Italy. Siblings were called Mary, Joe and Jack after their arrival in USA; not sure of their Italian names. Another sibling, Saverio, had already arrived in NYC in 1903. Their home town in Italy was Mercato San Severino, but Lucia (Lucy) stated on naturalization form in NYC that she was from Salerno.
Hope someone can help find her on the passenger list!!

Just to clarify a point, her mother's name was almost certainly not Giovanna Grimaldi, but rather Giovanna SomethingElse.

Italian women do not take on their husband's surname after marriage. When looking at a manifest for a woman who was travelling without her husband, you need to look for maiden names. For example:

Jones, Mary Female Age 30
Son Smith, John Male Age 6
Son Smith, William Male Age 3
Daughter Smith, Jane Female Age 1

If she was with her husband:

Smith, Joseph Male Age 35
Wife Mary Female Age 30
Son John Male Age 6
Son William Male Age 3
Daughter Jane Female Age 1

Check out lines 10 - 14 on this manifest. The original is here.

The name was transcribed as "Griswald" (now there's a nice Italian name...)

Darn! You beat me to it!

Are you sure about "Spisso"? Impossible to tell from the manifest.

Also, looks like Lucia's age was originally written in as "12" then changed to 15. If 12 were correct, that would bring the birth year to 1892, as expected.

We posted at the same time Johnny!
Yes, I'm sure, Spisso is a lastname present in Mercato San Severino: (even if on the manifest is written Spissa, but Spissa doesn't exist)

that could be my problem! But now the bigger problem is that I can't decifer Giovanna's maiden name. The only time I saw it was on Lucia's marriage certificate (NYC) to Fioravante Casella, 4 Feb 1912. Appears to be something like Scasso or perhaps it starts with a "T", appears to be about 5-6 letters long, likely ending in "...sso".

Maria (Mary), Lucia, Giuseppe (Joe), Giacomo (Zack).

I make the ages out to be 14, 12, 11, and 8.

I have another question on my grandfather's side. Family is from Tricarico and I can't figure out his mother's name. Filomena (Magnolo, Maguolo, Magnola). Do any of these names seem right for that area? She never immigrated so no official documents outside of the son writing her name on his marriage lisence.
