Need help with Italian birth certificate

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Need help with Italian birth certificate

Post by grandamn »

I need help!

I collected all my documents needed for citizenship except for my great grandfathers birth certificate. I just got a letter from the commune saying

In response to your letter of January 25, 2010 protocol on February 1, 2010 No 1954, I did some research on Mr. VERNI Saverino, but unfortunately I could not find one person born in Acquaviva delle Fonti (Bari), I can only suggest moving the research at the City of "SANNICANDRO di Bari" in that the Surname "Verni" has origins in the town of Sannicandro di Bari.

Distinti saluti

On all his documents and my family said he was "from" Acquaviva delle Fonti (Bari). Any ideas on what I should do now? I don't want to wait a month to hear a response from SANNICANDRO di Bari

The two comuni are separated by just 14 kilometers; using today's population, Acquaviva delle Fonti has about twice the residents of Sannicandro di Bari (21,000 vs. 9,300). Your relatives may simply have referred to the larger comune because they thought more people would be familiar with it.

A search of the Italian telephone directory shows no Verni's in Acquaviva Delle Fonti and more than 20 in Sannicandro di Bari.

I think, in the smaller comuni especially, the officials have a good knowledge of their records and they do seem to make an effort to fulfill requests accurately. If he says he could not find a record, there is a very good chance that one does not exist. I would take his advice and try Sannicandro di Bari.
