military records

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

You might wish to re\quest your document from the Ufficio di Stato Civile in the Comune in PLURILINGUE format for dual citizenship purposes. =Peter=

Here's another issue. There seems to be no record of my grandparents' marriage. It's possible they were married in San Francisco before the earthquake in 1906, in which case, all the records were destroyed. Searching the internet, no record comes up anywhere. How do you deal with this if your applying for citizenship through jure sanguinis? They appear as married on several US census records however, and my father appears there as their son. Does that count?

Can you fnd out what church they were married in, perhaps those records were not destoyed. In any case I wonder if they were required to have a marriage license in those days? Here before 1916 it was optional.

Technically, it doesn't matter if the parents were married, so long as you can provide a direct and unbroken link from the applicant to an Italian ancestor. In other words, if little Billy's birth certificate lists Luigi as his father, the fact that Luigi never married Billy's mother does not come into play. In fact, Billy's mom may have been married to an entirely different person at the time; all that matters is wheher Billy's birth certificate lists a parent (either mother or father, depending on your chosen lineage) who was an Italian citizen or had the right to Italian citizenship at the time Billy was born.

I don't think anyone knows why some consulates demand documents for non-direct line ancestors and/or marriage certificates, or death certificates for persons who are clearly deceased (those born before 1890, for example). These additional documents are in no way needed to fulfill the jure sanguinis requirements as written in Italian law.

In any event, the consualtes are aware of the problems caused by the San Francisco earthquake and will suggest other options should you be missing a "critical" document.

[quote="corrado"]oh the postage is 98 cents airmail... I don't see any reason to send it regestersed that is a waste of money. For a lot of us here finding the comune to send it to was a big job. If you have that great!

By the way, is throwing just a bunch of stamps on a letter to Italy going to get the letter there? I sent a request to Napoli 5 weeks ago for a birth certificate with about 3 stamps on it. I havent heard anything. Now Im wondering if they even got it. I mailed it from my house instead of the post office. Do you think its an issue?

If there was insufficient postage, the U.S. Post Office would have sent it back to you.

Thats what Im thinking. When Ive had mail returned to me int he past it took forever. But Im thinking 3 stamps for one piece of paper to napoli is sufficient. I hope. Maybe they just ignored my request and should mail another.

You could try emailing stato.civile@comune.napoli.it (remove the spaces on either side of the "@" symbol)

But I dont know Italian. I used the letter generator to send it in the mail. Im afraid he wasnt born in Napoli and thats why they didnt respond. I got napoli as last place of residence from his ship manifest. But Im not certain he was born there. He was 30 when he came here so he very well could have been born somewhere else and just lived in Naples

One option would be to just copy the text from your letter into an email.

A few weeks ago, I asked Livio how to ask in Italiano, "Please tell me if you have received my request and how long it may take to provide the documents."

His response, "Per cortesia mi faccia sapere se ha ricevuto la mia richiesta e quanto tempo ci vuole per avere i documenti".

So, you might begin your email with the question above and then paste your original letter below.

Of course, Italy is six hours ahead of us; it is 2:40 PM here on the East coast, that makes it 8:40 PM Friday in Italy. Don't expect to hear anything before Monday. :)
