English equivalent for given name "Ilario"

Post by jt27 »

My great grandfather had a brother named Ilario, but after a certain point (1910 census, I think it was) I can't find him. I was thinking that he may have started using an English version of his name. I've found that alot of people still have this name, but I can't find an English equivalent for it anywhere. Anyone have any ideas on this?

I am not aware of a typical English replacement for Ilario. Would you care to share the surname and place where he was last found (1900 census?)?

Sirena is absolutely right.

ELARIO: Variant spelling of Italian Ilario, meaning "joyful, happy." ... ILARIO: Italian form of Latin Hilarius, meaning "joyful; happy. ...

Perhaps Americanized to Henry?

Yes, Hillary is the exact translation for Ilario but I saw that people sometimes used names having more or less the same sound instead of a translation. Try with Larry.

Hillary/Hilary may be the literal translation, but I don't envision an Italian male immigrant looking to fit in to his new surroundings more easily changing from Ilario to Hilliary. :)

Either do I. But the facts somehow elude the fashion in names in this case. =Peter=

Actually, the only fact we have is that Ilario was present for the 1910 census and not for the 1920. The original poster believes this may be the result of an unknown name change.

As for me, I hope the origianl poster will give us the full name and enough other detail to allow some of us to perform our own research.

The original poster may want to consider the possiblity that Ilario simply returned to Italy, a not unheard of event...

Sorry all! I wasn't receiving the usual email notifications when people responded to this thread! Thank you for your interest in this...here is all the info I have:

Ilario Sorbo, born 1891 in Italy (family was from Teano and/or it's frazione San Marco) He came to the US with his father Andrea in Oct. 1902. He must have returned to Italy at some point, because in 1906 he appears on the ship manifest, arriving with his mother, Columba (nee De Quattro) and one of his brothers, Eugenio. After that, there is no record of him that I can find. Some of the family returned to Italy after 1913 (Columba and four of the children: Maria, Juliete, Alfonso and Gualderico). According to their 1921 return manifest, Alfonso remained in Italy (he was listed as next of kin in Italy). There is no mention of Ilario.

That is all the info I have.

ADDITIONAL INFO JUST FOUND: On Ancestry.com, there is a family tree listing that includes an"Elario" Sorbo, born 1893 in Teano and married Jan 23, 1910 in Rhode Island. I can't access the actual tree (waiting for tax return to renew my membership on Ancestry). The family tree is under the surname "Rocco"
