Amending my own birth certificate

I've read some of the last posts about amendments.

I have an appointment in LA in 3 weeks. I am going through my mother. On my NYC birth certificate, her maiden name is misspelled - the last letter is "i" instead of "a".

I am having the birth certificate amended as we speak but I sent it to NYC in early January and have yet to receive the correction - they say it takes about 90 days.

I have an uncorrected birth certificate which is ready to be apostilled and translated. If I don't receive my NYC correction by time of my meeting, I'm going to present an apostilled non-corrected BC.

Is a misspelling of my mother's maiden name on my own birth certificate a big deal when it is obvious from the other documents who she is - she is still alive - and what the true spelling is?

Anyone else have this problem or heard of it?

Bring the uncorrected certificate to your meeting and, if the subject comes up - or even if it doesn't - just explain that you have requested an ammended certificate and will forward it (May I have the mailing address, please?) to the consulate as soon as you receive it.

Actually, I would definitely go ahead and alert the consulate and ask that they be sure to use your corrected certificate in the final package. That way, when your birth is eventually registered in Italy, all of the names will be spelled correctly.

I was going to bring it up and tell them. They'll probably be a few short day's lag, if any.

I was just wondering if it was the kind of thing to postpone my meeting. But I was going to "play dumb" and think it only a "discrepency" that I had to list.

BTW, I didn't even catch this misspelling on my American passport.
