Greco/Grieco family from the Avellino province

Post by cecsheets »

I'm researching my husband's genealogy.

I've found a lot of info on his g-grandfather Pasquale Nutile (plus three of his brothers and one sister) who came to America from Avellino. Usually, the family's hometown is listed as Taurasi, but it's also been recorded as Lapio.

Like most families, they immigrated individually and in small groups. Pasquale was probably the first to arrive in 1895.

We know that Pasqaule's wife was also from Avellino. But we have less info on her. It seems every document has a different spelling of her name. Usually her first name is listed as Emilia. But her last name has been written as Grieco, Greco, Gries, Griees, Grega. (Any idea which of these would be most likely?)

We believe that they were married in Italy and both were living in Boston prior to 1900. But I don't think she came with him originally.

According to the 1910 census, Pasquale's mother-in-law was also living with them in Chicago. Her name was Giovanna/Giovannia/Giovannina Colella.

Pasquale made at least one trip back to Italy in 1910 to bring his mother and sister-in-law to Chicago.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum :D !
Do you have all of your US records?
If not we may be able to help you look.
Have you written to Taurasi for any records?
You could also view records on microfilm for Taurasi at your local Family History Center
Civil records are available from 1809-1910.
We can help direct you if you aren't familiar with the Family History Centers (LDS)

for everyone's reference, the 1910 census you mentioned in your post:

avitrees.com lists Grieco and Nutile as surnames from Taurasi, but not the other ones you listed....and for Lapio: none of the names you listed are there.

HOWEVER....I had to add a few of my own surnames for a different town in Italy. . . . (meaning Avitree doesn't have all surnames listed).

I am having teriffic luck with the Family History Library...viewing microfilms....maybe you would too....
Researching: Guarino, Di Prisco, Zizza, Panichella, Magno, and now Antonelli, and Calvo....with a few others sprinkled in. Towns: Mirabella Eclano and Bonito (so far).

You were right, according to this possible manifest, Pasquale and Emilia were married before they arrived in Boston
(there was another Pasquale Nutile in Boston ...)

No, I have not yet written to Italy for any records. Nor have I visited my local Family History Center. (I have the address and hours of operation, now I just need the time to get there!)

Valarie, Thank you so much for those manifests! How in the world did you find those? I've been on the Ellis Island site for weeks, but obviously my search skills need some improving...

Those records from NEHGS are correct. That's the birth record for my FIL's "Uncle Charlie." We knew Charlie wasn't the first child, but didn't have any records.

Is there anyway to access these records w/o becoming a member of NEHGS? W/ three small children, there's just not any room in our budget for this type of expense. :-(

I think I found Pasquale, Emilia, their daughter - Maria Benigna and Pasquale's brother - Charles on the 1900 Census.
http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/2205 ... snutil.jpg

This MIGHT be Pasquale's brother Charles (Ciriaco) arriving in 1900.
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0026

Here's the manifest of Pasquale bringing his mother and sister-in-law to Chicago in 1910.
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0009

And the manifest of Pasquale's brother, Giovanni arriving in NY in 1909.
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0012
There are two pages and I can't quite make out all the info, so if anyone wants to give it a look...

I'm still trying to find two of Pasquale's siblings on manifests:
brother Guiseppe (b. 1883/4) and his wife Gensualda Catullo (b. 1894)
I found birth records for their children on familysearch.org.
And the 1920 census which lists Josie as a widow. http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/8135 ... census.pdf

sister Mariantonia (b. circa 1878)
I found her marriage license http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/2773 ... rriage.jpg
birth records on 3 of her six chidren
her husband's (Michele Pasquarello) draft registration from WWI
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/1318 ... adraft.jpg
and the Pasquarello's on the 1920 census

Thanks for all your help so far! Christine

Hi Christine!
Thank you for the update

cecsheets wrote:No, I have not yet written to Italy for any records.

There is no charge if you want to write for a few key records.
Here's the address if you need it:

Address:

Comune di Taurasi
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Via del Convento 1
83030 Taurasi AV
ITALY

http://www.tuttitalia.it/campania/30-taurasi/

Website for finding comune addresses:
http://www.nonsolocap.it/

Italian form letter generator with instructions:
http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... civile.asp

Or other helpful form letters:
http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html

How in the world did you find those?

I found Pasquale and his family on the gold form by searching last name begins with N, town name Taurasi, between the years 1892-1900 - and got lucky

I found Emilia's mother by searching for only the town of Taurasi between the years 1892 and 1900 (no name).

Those records from NEHGS are correct. That's the birth record for my FIL's "Uncle Charlie." We knew Charlie wasn't the first child, but didn't have any records. Is there anyway to access these records w/o becoming a member of NEHGS?

Unless your library has a subscription I don't think you can access the books. I can't capture the images and attach them :?
The MA Archives may have the records but not the details:

http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcsrch/ ... tents.html
The FamilySearch Piolt site has some MA deaths and marriages:
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/rec ... html#start
edit: fixed link
Great finds on your records :D ! I couldn't find that 1900 census anywhere.
Have you found any of Emilia's brothers?

The MA Archives pulled up a death record for a
Ciriacco Nutile in Boston in 1900, volume 507, page 276.

I would be interested in this! Family history says that "Uncle Charlie" was the second son with that name. The other died in Boston. This may very well be that missing son.

mother(?), name is pretty illegible, in Taurasi

If you don't know their mother's name, there may be a clue in their children's names:
There has been a strong custom in Italy that determines how children are named:

The first male is named after his paternal grandfather.
The second male is named after his maternal grandfather.
The first female is named after her paternal grandmother.
The second female is named after her maternal grandmother.

You're welcome :D
Dr Steve Morse has some amazing one-step pages:
http://www.stevemorse.org/

I saved it on my desktop from ancestry. com
I use imageshack. us to upload the image
(I usually don't resize anything)
Then I use the 'direct link' to post addresses to the images

You found him!
It seems that they lost both children within days of each other.
I neglected to notate that Maria Benigna was also buried in Cambridge
(not noted as 'Old' Cambridge)

Ah ha. Since I'm not a member of ancestry.com, I can only view manifests from www.ellisisland.org. And you can't do anything from that site except view -- no printing, no saving. :? So I'm going to try using the library version of Ancestry and see if I can save images from there.

I think I'll visit the Family History Center before I write to Italy for any records.

I wonder why Giovanni made the trip back to Italy. :?: It wasn't to accompany anyone... Maybe he was supposed to bring his mother to America, but wasn't as persuasive as Pasquale was a year later.

The mother of Pasquale, Guiseppe, Giovanni, Maria Antonia was Maria Guiseppa Lepore Nutile. (There was at least on more brother, Ralph. He was the eldest. And, as far as I know, he remained in Italy.)

Here's the manifest of Pasquale bringing his mother and sister-in-law to Chicago in 1910.
www.ellisisland.org/EI...&line=0009
Pasquale and Maria Guiseppa listed their nearest Italian relative as sister/daughter Carmela Nutile of Taurasi.

From the Illinois Death Index and cemetery records...
Maria Guiseppa Lepore Nutile was born in 1837 and died on 30 September 1915 at the age of 78 and was buried on 3 October 1915 at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cg ... 20Cemetery&

I haven't found any of Emilia's brothers. But I do have some info on her sister. Off to get those links...

I found Emilia Grieco's sisters on the 1920 census.
(My husband's family knew them as Sophia Scoppa and Sue/Asunda.)

SOFIA GRIECO
Last line of Page 1, Husband/Head Pelingo ??? (PELLEGINO SCOPA)
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/5295 ... census.pdf
First line of Page 2, Sofy Scopa
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4529 ... census.pdf

On pilot.familysearch.org, I found:
-- record of their daughter Rosa's marriage to Achille Degrazia in 1908;
-- records of the deaths of two sons named Antonio -- one in 1908, the other in 1910. (On the death records, Sofia's maiden name was recorded as Rieco.)

SUSAN DESTEFANO
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/6128 ... census.pdf

Again, on pilot.familysearch.org, I found record of their son Antonio's death in 1911. (On that record, their last name was recorded as Di Stefano and "Susan" was "Assunta")
