Help reading manifest please

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Help reading manifest please

Post by chelssavoy »

My ggmother Argene Ciampi is listed on the ellis island website. I can't make out who the relative she was meeting when she arrived. I believe it says her father ? Valentino. Can't make out the first name or what written just under that. Anyones help would be great!
Thanks

The father is Valentino (first name) Bellandi (surname), the second line is Altopascio.

The original poster needs to go back and check the manifest. The indicated name in Column 13, father Valentino, is not the relative meeting her in the US, but the nearest relative left behind in the country of origin.

The relative meeting her is in Column 18. In this case, husband Guido Ciampi whose address appears to be 1343 50th Court, Cicero, IL.

Interesting, an Italian woman traveling alone under her married name.

The manifest also indicates a verification of arrival notation beginning in Col. 6. That would indicate a naturalization process was begun and there will be a file with USCIS (formerly INS).

Unless that was her maiden name as well...

In smaller comuni in particular, marrying a cousin wasn't terribly unusual.

I was assuming a maiden name of Bellandi, based on her father's name.
