Researching Northern Italy - Help needed

Post by lola66 »

I would like to begin researchin my maternal grandfather's family and do not know where to start. I;ve been researching my fathers side for a few years now so I know all the basics. This is more of a geographical quandry. My grandfather and his family are from a town named Tai de Cadore located in the province of Belluno. This area was part of Austria for awhile and I believe germany at one time. I need to start my research during the WWI era and really dont know where to start. I would like to start with birth/death/marriage Microfilms if they are available. Any one who can give me information as to where to start looking would be a great help!

Thank you

There is an excellent book that will assist you. It is Italian genealogical records by Trafford R. Cole. it is an easy read and will give you the answers. Peter

Its the most anti-learning website I ever came across. You need a proper italian grammar book with chapters devoted sequentially to learning the language step by step. There is no easy way to learn a language when you do not live there on a day to day basis. you have to memorize memorize and memorize verbs, idomatic expressions and vocabulary....I realize that to young people these days this brings sdhock and dismay to actually have to use their brains!!!!!!!!!!!Peter

I would recommend Joel Cole with Italroots.com
I have a personal collection of all the parish records at Valle di Cadore. I am doing research there currently.Talk to Joel, he has done a lot of research in the Cadore area.
thanks

What is the next larger town of Tai de Cadore? I have all of the parish records at Valle di Cadore. I am currently having them all extracted and put into families and a parish family tree. I have ancestors from that parish.
The records in this area are of very good quality and date back to the 1550's. The priests are very nice as well.

What surnames are you researching? I checked the map and your town is right next door. I was up there in September and July of this year microfilming.
