Question about uploading a small file for help with name

Post by donnawright »

I cropped three lines off an index of births to ask someone to help read a name. After I "attach" I got the message that the attachment has exceded the limit in size. It's a small jpg file, and when I looked at the link for sizes and extensions, it says no maximum. Please explain if you can.

Thanks

It's an ongoing problem for whatever reason... :? Only Edmondo can fix it, so for now, I would upload it to imageshack or a similar site.
Thanks for your patience...

Thanks Lee. I posted an image shack link under translations. All I need on this is the first name... hopefully a cinch for someone to recognize.

The board limits attachments to 256kb in size; anything larger will be rejected. There are several tools available to reduce the filesize of an image, IrfanView is a popular and free application; depending on your version of Windows/MacOS, you may also have an appropriate tool already on your system.

In addition to the 256kb per image limitation, there is also a limit on the total size of all images posted by a single user. I often hit this limit and find that I must go back to old posts and delete images occasionally in order to bring down my total. Since images posted directly to the board consume server disk space (a single image can use the same space as hundreds of non-image posts), it is completely reasonable (although a bit of a pain) for the board's owner to set limits on individual users.

Carmine, you are right when you say that there are many tools capable to reduce the size of an image, but often reducing the size will result in insufficient quality to allow deciphering it.
The best way is to upload them to a hosting system, as suggested by Lee.
Photobucket is one of them, but the pictures disappear after a while. Imageshack seems to have no limits.
