Searching for Carcione and Metastasio
Searching for Carcione and Metastasio
Hello,
I am new to the seach for my Italian family.
My grandmother's name is Concetta Carcione and I know that she came to the US from Sicily area. There is a CC on the Ellis Island NY Passenger List, aboard ship Neckar from Tortorici and that may be her.
My grandfather's name is Savatore Metastasio and he was from Naples area. When he arrived he began a restaurant in Jamestown called Diamond Grill. I do not have him yet on a passenger list.
I believe they did not travel together.
My father Pietro Metastasio is deceased. His brother Arthur is also deceased. My aunts are not communicative as one is in a nursing facility and the other one is very reclusive. (Vera and Mary)
Is there info on them available as to their lives in Italy or ancestry of relatives? I do not have birth and death dates.
Thank you for any help... Vera Lisa Metastasio-Smetzer

Re: Searching for Carcione and Metastasio
Hello Vera
Welcome to the forum .
Records for your family in Italy are kept at the comune (town).
Finding US records with that information would be a 1st step - ship manifests, naturalization paperwork, sometimes military registration cards for WWI or WWII.
Do you have any of your US records?
It's generally recommended to collect all of your US records first so you're sure you're researching the correct family in Italy.
Thank you, Valarie

I don't have any papers..
Oh my goodness, that looks like my grandfather. Now I wonder about the spelling of my grandmother's name - Carcione or Cardone!
Thank you for your help, Valarie!!!!

Re: Searching for Carcione and Metastasio
Vera,
I'm glad you caught that - it was a transcription error on ancestry. com.
Was Salvatore and Concetta in MA abt 1942?
There's a WWII Draft Registration Card for a Salvatore born 18 Feb 1884 with a wife Carrie.
The reason I ask, there are quite a few comunes with Sant'Elena in the name, this WWII Card states Salvatore was born 'near Rome'.
Here's a possible 1906 manifest
from ancestry. com

Salvatore Metastasio 22, abt 1884
- single
- laborer
- last residence Elena (probably Sant'Elena)
- destination Somerville, MA
- may have been in Somerville 1901-1904, hard to tell which line the notation is for

Re: Searching for Carcione and Metastasio
Valarie,
You've got him... my grandfather's relative's name is Lucarelli - my dad's cousin had that name. I remember him talking about him.
And yes, grandparents Salvatore and my grandmother Concetta were in US in 1942. My father was born in 1910 in Jamestown, NY. They went from Jamestown, NY to Somerville. MA and were there for years.
Hm... Carrie? Another possible error?
I know the family talk was my grandfather was born in the north and my grandmother in the south.
This gives me goosebumps! Good ones!
Blessings,
Vera

Re: Searching for Carcione and Metastasio
Vera ,
Great! Now we have Salvatore's birth date.
Could 'Carrie' be Concetta's nickname?
Interesting that Salvatore signed his name with a 'z'

Re: Searching for Carcione and Metastasio
That's my grandfather - so good to have his birthdate! Yes, interesting that he signed his name with a z = boy, that would have made life a bit easier when I was growing up if the family had kept the spelling that way. LOL!
My grandmother must have had that for a nickname, I wish it seemed familiar. Her birthdate was about 1889. I am wondering if she is the woman from Tortorici, Italy on the Neckar ship that arrived 1907. Or the woman that left Palermo and arrived 1902 aboard Spartan Prince - a bit closer in age.
I just keep going back to those documents - they they are. This is the most info I am have ever had! Thank you...

Re: Searching for Carcione and Metastasio
Actually, it appears that Salvator wasn't sure of his birthdate
In 1942 it was 18 Feb 1884
When he filled out his SS Application it was 21 Sep 1884
This really wasn't that unusual .
Social Security Death Index
Name: Salvatore Metastazio
SSN: 011-12-xxxx
Last Residence: 02143 Somerville, Middlesex, Massachusetts
Born: 21 Sep 1884 Died: 31 Jul 1970

Re: Searching for Carcione and Metastasio
I'm guessing that her first (and probably her only) trip was in 1911.veralisa wrote: My grandmother must have had that for a nickname, I wish it seemed familiar. Her birthdate was about 1889. Perhaps Salvatore's reason for returning in 1910 was to get married?

Re: Searching for Carcione and Metastasio
Ah, yes, 1911 - neither maybe correct - one is 1907 and one is 1902 - I will check ship records again ti see if there is a 1911.
Yes, it probably wasn't that unusual about the date entries... many reasons I suppose possibly for that. When I was little, I remember some jokes about this...
Did you catch the France- Italian? Hm -
Very good idea on SS purchase! Thank you.
Feels amazing to get this far. Wow!

Oh my, yes, you already have it... I need to copy all of our posts!!!
This one means the world to me... for some reason, I always really wanted so to believe that she did not make that trip across the water alone. And look, Sept. 18 til Oct. 3 to make it to NY. And they were together and married...
Really chokes me up here... I feel close to them today. And I thank you so much for all your looking. I think I would still be doing a lot of guessing!
? Huge hugs... ?

Vera,
I think you're right, the picture of Salvatore and Concetta is becoming clearer with each record .
He was quite enterprising to head out on his own at age 16 to join his brother in MA!
When you discover which Sant'Elena he is from you'll be able to find his family in Italy.
Italian records are wonderfully complete and informative!
