looking for Sicilian GGP's - Porto Empedocle

Post by crystalferrara »

Hi all,

My research is getting stuck. Looking for help identifying names and dates for my great great grandparents circa 1820-1840 in Porto Empedocle, Agrigento, Sicilia.

I'm looking for the parents of my great grandparents, Pietro Catalano and Carmela Muscato.

I'm also looking for the parents of my great grandparents, Giuseppe Ferrara and Maria Sanfilippo.

I don't know their names or their dates of birth/death. I only know they were from Porto Empedocle.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Grazie mile,
Crystal

Hello, on Pietro Catalano, Carmela Muscato, Giuseppe Ferrara and Maria Sanfilippo birth records, there is written the age of each father, at time of baby birth.
Also there is written that each father was resident of Porto Empedocle, not born in Porto Empedocle, and also sometimes the father lies the age.
So you can make some counts and try to step back in the past easily, at least starting from Porto empedocle of course.
I hope it helps
bye Riccardo

Dear Crystal,
The Mormon Family History Library has microfilms that can be rented and read at their facility for Porto Empedocle for the period 1835 - 1910. There are 12 microfilms containing the civil registration records - births, marriages and deaths. To find the microfilm numbers go to their web site:
http://www.familysearch.org. Then click on the following:
Library
Library Catalog
Place Search
Place (enter the name of the town only)
click the Search button
keep clicking on the links until you see "View Film Notes" in the upper right, click on this to get the film numbers.

The records are written in Italian. There is a great book that you can buy, (available online) entitled: "A Genealogist's Guide to Discovering Your Italian Ancestors" by Lynn Nelson. This book contains a lot of great information, including the translations of the Italian documents.

This is "one" way to get the information you are seeking and a very rewarding way, if you have the time to do the research yourself.
