Finding information on Italian Priests

Post by debcash »

My grandfather's brother was a priest in Italy, I assume Sicily since that is where they were born. Can anyone help me in finding out more information of the Priest. I know that he stayed in Sicily but his two brothers immigrated to the US. I know his name and the family story is that he died on the steps of the Church while going in to say a prayer for his brother, who he had just found out, had died. I know the year the brother died here in the US. Please Help.

Try ordering his birth record it may have a notation of the place of his death. It is unlikely the civil death record will confirm your story but the church record may.

Debcash I assume you can locate the town of their birth in Sicily and perhaps by contacting the parish church where they were born it is possible that since the deceased priest was from their town of origin there might be a record in the parish church(es). Please let me know so that we can direct your inquiries eithe rlocally or the diocese.=Peter=

My grandfather was born in Montemaggiore Belsito in 1883. I don't know how much older Librorio was.

If he progressed within the Roman Catholic hierarchy, you may find him listed in this database: http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/country/it.html

PS: Where haved you been hiding the past six months?

I work 50+ hours a week and don't get to spend as much time searching as I'd like. I didn't find him listed in the Bishop or Cardinal listing. I assume he would have the same last name as my grandfather. I think he died in approximately 1937 or 1938.
