Children's Citizenship

I haven't seen any question or answer for this one. I qualify to be recognized through my GGF[naturalized 3-15-1915],GF [born 1-10-1914] ,F. My children born after 1948. I have never been married. I have two children neither have a birth certificate with a father listed. Both have my last name. I have heard in Italy you still have to give the last name of your children their fathers last name? It should be after getting all the right paperwork no problem for me to get recognized but has anyone had an issue with their children like this. Will they have a problem with this. I have no intention of adding a father or changing names. One is an adult , one a minor. We are going through S.F.

Hoo boy. I hope that's not true. My husband and I chose to give our children MY last name. My husband's name does appear on the birth certificates, though. I hope that doesn't jam me up...

Personally, I would not worry too much about this. The Italian government makes allowances for the crazy messes we may have gotten ourselves into before we officially became Italian citizens.

Current law in Italy does not permit a child to be named after his or her father/mother, nor does it allow for suffixes like Jr, Sr, III, and so on.

Nevertheless, my citizenship was recognized and my Italian passport has "Jr" after my surname, just like on my US passport.

Thanks again, Carmine. Although I prefer not to think of giving my kids my last name as a crazy mess. It was a conscious choice by both my husband and I to emphasize their Italian heritage. It would be pretty ironic if I were penalized for that by the Italian gov't. 8O
