FHL Microfilm: Matrimoni vs. Pubblicazioni

Post by uzzk23a »

I am searching for a marriage record from Sciacca, Agrigento, Italy in the 1870's.
I will want to request a reel of microfilm from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
They have some microfilm reels with "matrimoni", but not for the 1870's period.

They do have two reels:
1) Nati 1909-1910 Pubblicazioni 1866-1879 VAULT International
and
2) Pubblicazioni 1864-1894 VAULT International

Would either (or both) of these microfilm reels contain the marriage record I'm after ?
Or should I look for something else / elsewhere ?

Thanks !

Publications are like the banns of marriage and precede the actual date of the marriage. Films with the word matrimoni in them would have the actual marriage records. If these are not available for the year you need, then the best you can get are the marriage publications.

I see the above film listed in the family history library catalog for Sciacca

Thanks for that film number !

When I look at the Family History Library Catalog page:
"Registri dello stato civile, 1820-1910
Sciacca (Agrigento). Ufficio dello stato civile"

I see:
Pubblicazioni 1864-1894 VAULT International Film 2016549

I wonder why I see something different than you ?
If that film has both Pubblicazioni and Matrimoni on it, that would be great. I am looking for the parents of the couple - would that be more likely to be found on the Pubblicazioni or the Matrimoni ?

Anyway, that sure looks like the Film I should request.
Thanks !!

In Italy what they did was announce the marriage first, that is why they call it Pubblicazioni and put the birthcertificates and sometimes death certificates of the parents in. Than you will get the marriage certificate, which list both parents name.
The marriage record will have the parents names.

It is very useful. I actually ordered a lot of them for my towns.

Anything in the VAULT means it is in the mountain of the FHC in Salt Lake City, so it takes a little extra time to get.

When a microfilm says processetti or allegati, you get other kinds of records such as birth and death records with the marriage records. Matrimoni are strictly marriage records and publications are just banns of marriage and not the actual marriage records.

When I look at the library catalog for Sciacca, the information I gave you came up concerning the film number and it having acts of matrimony on it. I cut and paste the link directly from the family history catalog. I don't know why you are seeing a different description for the film number.

The names of the couples' parents should be on both the publications and on the act of matrimony itself.

Thanks, everybody ... sounds like a plan !
I'll just have to cool my jets while awaiting the microfilm.

It depends on the town and who filmed them. Honestly, some of my allegati has just marriage records.

Definitely get both films if you can. On my towns pub, it has everything, the bride and grooms birth records, the death certificates of their parents if they died. That is because they announce the marriage 2 times before the wedding. In one of my towns that I have done a lot of work on, the marriage records has the same thing as the pubb.
