my ggrand father was alfred michael angelo sparrow born in 1874 london
father said to be george sparrow wine merchant ?
alfred spoke italian but his children never did speck italian we do not know were the italian comes in
we think that he may have been adopted or mother spoke italian
we are gesing as we have no info on him before 1909 when he married
he was a ships stawerd ?
any one thinking that he may be on there family tree or any one that disapered from there tree send a line

The Italian word for sparrow (like the bird) is passero and, in fact, there are over three hundred telephone listings in the Italian directory for Passero's ( http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... o&dv=&l=en ).

Any chance that your original family name is Passero and that it was anglicized to Sparrow at some point in the past?

How far back have you traced the Sparrow lineage?

Is it possible that both of Alfred's parents were Italian? Have you obtained his birth certificate?
If so, could the original name have been Sparro?

This surname is not common in Italy, but it is widespread (in 11 comunes) throughout Italy.

If you haven't got a copy of his birth certificate, obtaining one might shed some light on his parents.

i have not got alfred's birth cert as we do not know were in london or if it was london
i have looked on ancestry and can not fined a borth for alfred
the only thing we know for definit is that
1 married in 1909 in gateshead on cert he gives father's name as george
sparrow wine merchaent decessed
2 went to the army in 1915 left in 1920
3 alfred died in 1942/3 gateshead

on alfred's ary recored he was born in 1874 london
on marrage cert he is born in 1878 london
so we do not know for defenet were he was born in uk or if he was born in uk

Have you searched on that site? If not, you might want to take out a short-term subscription to them (or a trial) so that you can get his details, and any other related person you find.

I don't subscribe to ancestry, so I can't help you with obtaining his records.

According to another website, Alfred Michael Angelo Sparrow was born in Soho, London in 1874. Ancestry.uk have him born in 1878 in London (I don't know which district, though).

You could write a request for his birth cert to the Registrar of births in Soho, telling them the year is 1874 but that it might be 1878, and see what happens.

There seems to be several Alfred Michael or Angelo Sparrows. In fact, Alfred seems to be a recurring name within Sparrow families.

The person I found in Soho is, I have just discovered,
Alfred Michael Sparrow, born 29/10/1874, christened at St Mary, Soho, Westminster. His parents were Henry Sparrow and Alicia M. Sparrow. They lived at 6 Marlborough Row, London.

I haven't found the A M Angelo Sparrow born 1878 in Somerset that Peter mentioned. You might want to search for him and see if he is the one you are looking for.
