Cottone

Post by rendonrea »

I am looking for distance cousins who can help with my family line.
My grandfather Salvatore Cottone came to the US through Ellis Island with his wife Angelina (Ferlita) Cottone and 4 children, Antonio, Eugene, Calove, Getto around 1900. They came to stay with Salvatore's brother Guiseppe in NY. They migrated to Marion, IL and have 4 more children, John, Virginia, Mary and Lena. Moved to Chicago, IL around late 1920's.
Any information contacts would be much appreciated.

Do yopu happen to know the town of originin Italy. There are numerous Salvatore Cottone but there was one Angelina Ferlita arriving in 1908 but being US citizen no italy town was mentioned. However the Salvatore Cottone arriivng in 1908 was on another ship so that could not be him since you say they came together.??? Peter

From what I found they migrated from Burgio. I found where they came over, but could not find my there four boys that were born in Italy.
What I am hoping for is some family member to see this post and possible email me. Ellis Island's geneology is terrific. This is where I started.

Have you done a surname search in the Chicago/Illinois area?
You could send out letters to potential relatives........

If you are looking for the four boys and can not find them then go to www.Nara.gov and under search write in the empty space obtain forms and obtrain form 81 for all passenger arrivals in the USA and fill in their names and dates of arrival. Peter

Looks like this Salvatore made a few trips... not sure if he is yours..

Are you sure they all travelled together?

Salvatore is traveling with an Antonino age 6... I looked at the next manifests page, and did not see the rest of the family. But because he made 3 trips that I know of (so far)... maybe others travelled with him in 1898 and another time in 1901. Busy guy...

Can you make out what the place is in Box 16 - Where they will be residing...

Dear rendondea maybe the four boys or some of them are dead. Did you try to find them in the social security death index? Go to www.ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com and see if you find them or maybe some nuice old lady will find them for you. Peter

Newbie! Thank you! You found him bringing his eldest son over.
I see the spelling, guess that's the key. Box 16 is Murphysboro, IL.
That is where they first went to. I also found in 1904 where Salvatore, wife and I'm guessing cousins all came over.

Then it is him!!! :P What was throwing me off was box 11. It would be nice to look for the manifests of 1898 another for 1901...1904.

mfjp

hmmm.. should be interesting to see which nice old man with infinite wisdom replies first!

How about $5.00 bet?
