Davia and Epifano from Pieve di cadore, Belluno

Post by JamesBianco »

My great grandfather Massimo DaVia was born 1872 in Pieve di Cadore, Provincia Belluno in Northern Italy. I just got his birth record from the Stato Last week and now I finally know his parent's names.

Burrei DaVia and Filomena Epifano.
His father's first name is really strange, I have never heard of it before.
We don't know much about Massimo, other than he married my great grandmother Amelia DelFavero in the neighboring town of Valle di Cadore (where she was born) They came to the USA in 1902, and moved around a lot. Massimo left his family just after my grandmother was born in 1920. I have tried so hard to find out what happened to him, my grandmother was always asking me to help. His last residence comes from a Post Card he sent them in 1931 from Lafayette, Indiana. He went by Max in this country. Would love to know where he died, and if maybe he married again.

Thanks

Happy New Year Jim!

Did you ever find Massimo's manifest??

Linking Amelia DelFavero's manifest to this post as a start...

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 2700070274

though you may have already seen it... others may want to view and help. It does mention Massimo, and Sandusky Ohio - Lake Erie area. She travels with daughters Giovanna age 3 and Linda age 1... but the last name is under the father's given name???8O Arcangelo Berton mentioned below would be a cousin. Is Berton the correct name too?

First Name: Amelia

Of all the more than 100 DaVia in the USA there is only one person who writes his surname Da Via and his first name is Art. he resides in Rochester, NY and while it may be a long shot, it's worth it, unless the way you spelled it above is in error. Peter

Happy New Year to you as well! Thanks for the manifest, I appreciate your help. Sandusky Ohio is really strange, because they were in Pennsylvania in 1904, Connecticut in 1906 and Massachusetts by 1910.
(I got that from Amelia's citizenship petition, as her daughter's birthplaces are all mentioned) and NO I havent found Massimo's passenger list, He came sometime between 1900 and 1903 tho, because they were in Prussia (just north of Belluno) and by 1903 when Amelia came he was already here. They have two daughter's still living, one turned 100 this year and the other is 96, they live in Darien and Stamford, CT. My poor grandmother, their youngest, didnt make it to 70.

And as far as the spelling DaVia..that is the way it is spelled in Italy, all the records from Pieve and Valle di Cadore have it spelled that way. And Amelia signed her name that way as well. Come to think of it, does anyone have that book series Italians to America?? I bet he would be in it.

Appreciate all your help guys :)

Wonderful work! Thank you. (Gee you are quick!) So 1901 it is tentatively. Emma is one of the two still alive. She always hid her age from the family, until I uncovered her mother's petition, and boy was she angry with me!!

Thanks again :)

Here's a long shot, year is off by one.. The first name could be Massimo. The surname is off, but you would be the best judge here.

He was from Sevinghausen (no clue as to where it is, as I never checked it out...) but Italian!

Very nice to hear about your great aunts. 100 and 96 years old!

Excellent work, that is so him! As I said in an earlier post, Massimo lived in Prussia for a while before he came to the US. I can't thank you enough.
I recieved his birth record from Pieve di Cadore recently and he was born 10 March 1872. making the age on this manifest perfect.

:D :!: Great! Wasn't sure - since the surname says Da David... but you never know with these manifests... Can you figure out what the rest of the manifest says? They certainly did move around eh? Will keep in touch.

Oh I found a wonderful resource, from the German government. It is an index of Passengers LEAVING Hamburg to the year 1934. Havent been able to find him yet leaving. but spelling is a problem I think.

To repeat the website is incomplete and only goes from 1890 to 1905 and you have to pay to obtain information The original dates for the database will extend from 1850 to 1934 and are available thru lists and not on any database. Please let me know if you want the english version of the hamburg lists metioned above. Peter

Burrei may be a surname - I think I have a person in my family tree with that last name who is from this area.

for the moment there are 2 Burrei currently in residence in pieve di cadore. www.paginebianche.it. You may also wish to use google and insert Burrei and genealogy for any research conducted to date on the surname itself,. if you add Pieve di Cadore to the tile it will concentarte on researches from that town.
