Birth note question

Post by ginaruiz1998 »

I found a birth note for a relative born in Sicily in 1862 tht reads "comune di Novara, distretto di Castroreale." Does it mean he was born in Novara, or in Castroreale?

Hello and welcome to the forum-
The town of Novara should be the place of birth.

Thank you! I guess I'm just confused then what Castroreale has to do with it! Was Castroreale the "administrative" center or what? I don't speak Italian so trying to find birth/marriage records is daunting!

Boundaries have changed over the years making it difficult to answer your question. According to the information in the record, at the time of the birth, the town of Novara was part of the district of Castroreale (yes, that would have been the administrative district). However, in seeking copies of the records, I would still contact the town of Novara di Sicilia. If the records are housed somewhere else, which they shouldn't be, they should tell you that info. I am linking your other thread here for reference and because I gave you some info which I hope will help you.
