birth records of giovannina salerno

Post by franct »

We are trying to locate the birth certificate of my great grandmother. Her name was Giovannina Salerno she was born in 1872 and we beleive she was born in gesuiti, consenza. She immigrated to USA in 1919. Her married name was Calomino. Does anyone have any idea where we would start to locate this information?
Thank you for your help

Did you mean Cosenza?
You can research birth, marriage and death records on microfilm at your local Lds library. Rental for film is less than 4.00.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... ato+civile++

the above link is for Cosenza.....dating from 1809 thru 1910.

to find a library near you........

Hope this is of some help.
There is a book by Trafford Cole "Italian Genealogical Records".
This book is very useful in understanding record keeping in Italy and how to go about requesting records. It is a fast, easy read.

The town name is a little confusing... I too searched for film for Gesuiti and got no results... I can see why Lee posted
Did you mean Cosenza?
I did an Ellis Island search and got a different variation of the town name...

"Gesuitiali S. Vincengo La Costi" should be SAN VINCENZO LA COSTA .. could this be the town you might research from?

www.ellisisland.org - when searching, use exactly as written below...

1 Bruno,Gaetano ....Gesuiti, Italy 1921  age 16
2 Calomino,Francisco .....Gesuiti 1903  age 19
3 Cesario,Maria Gesuitiali .....S. Vincengo La Costi 1899  41
4 Colormino,Fiorentino Gesuiti, Caserta 1908  21
5 Curto,Antonino Gesuiti 1903  21
6 Di Biase,Francesco Gesuitiali S. Vincengo La Costi 1899  23
7 Ianduono,Gaetano Gesuiti 1905  23
8 Ilaleano,Angelo Espesoto Gesuitiali S. Vincengo La Costi 1899  38
9 Mancino,Aguslina Gesuiti 1901  24
10 Perre,Emilio Gesuiti, Caserta 1908  15
11 Ripoli,Concetta Gesuiti 1906  2
12 Ruffolo,Domenico Gesuiti

There are film notes for SAN VINCENZO LA COSTA that can be ordered.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... umns=*,0,0

Using the Locations Database from this forum, the town is written as this...
SAN VINCENZO LA COSTA (Cosenza)
GESUITI (Township)

If there is a particular manifest you want looked up, please let us know.

Please go to the link that Lee posted for you... and fill in the rest.... plus the book she recommends is also good advice.

Once you find a Family History Center close to your home, give them a phone call... people there are very helpful... make an appointment and don't forget to bring your film information with you. Also, get in touch with a library near you. They can direct you to a library where you can order the same Family History film.

Plus here is a great post by "brujaojos"

Did you ever find Giuseppe's boat record?

Dear Fran,

Gesuiti is in the District of Cosenza which is in the Province of Calabria. I did not see any microfilm for the town istelf. However, it is stated that Gesuiti is a hamlet of San Vincenzo la Costa.

There is microfilm that you can order and rent at your local Family History Center for about $3.50 a roll. The link for the film is below.

Do you know your grandmother's husband's name? Do you know what State they lived in? Any information would be a big help.

Have a good one.

Hi To everyone,
Thanks so much for the great information. Actually my great grandfather came to the USA at 27 then at 32 went back to Italy and came back again to the USA so I do have his records on file through Ellis Island. It looks like the family lived in Cosenza as that is where all the data points to. So it would be wonderful if we could get their marriage and birth certificates. I also know that my grandfather had a brother I think his name was Carl who died before they were able to all come to america. We have very little information about him. I have talked with my dad who is the genealogist in the family and has been building these records. Apparently we have a cousin who is going to Italy next month and he is going to attempt to get the records. In the meantime I am going to contact the FHC in Denver and see what they may have on file. Too bad that we waited until everyone in the family who would know this stuff died.
I'll keep you posted, gosh who knows we may all be related!
