List of documents I need - want to double check

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

List of documents I need - want to double check

Post by vanessa1105 »

Hi everybody, so I am going with the GGF-GM-F-Me line and I am also dealing with 3 countries but I had a few questions to make sure I am getting all the paperwork I actually do need. I will also be applying through New York which I have heard crazy stories :( I am not sure what needs to be apostille and what doesnt. To be safe, I should get everything translated, but for example my parent's divorce does that need to be apostilled? I would appreciate all the help i could get.

GGF:
Birth Certificate (italy)
Death Certificate (ny - apostille and translation)
Naturalization Records (ny - apostille and translation?)
No record of renouncing italian citizenship (peru - apostille and translation)

GGM: (non direct line)
Birth Certificate (peru - translated)
(She and my ggf didnt get married and she stayed in Peru when he moved to NY)

GM:
Birth Certificate (peru - apostille and translation)
Naturalization Records (usa - apostille and translation?)
Marriage certificate (peru - apostille and translation)

GF: (not direct italian line)
Birth Certificate (peru - translated)
Marriage certificate with my grandmother.( peru - apostille and translation)

Father:
Birth Certificate (peru - apostille and translation
Marriage Certificate with my mom (Peru - apostille and translation)
Divorce certificate with my mom (NC - does this need to be apostilled and translated? )

Mother: (not direct Italian line)
Birth Certificate: (Peru - translated)
Marriage Certificate with my dad (peru - apostille and translation)
Divorce certificate with my dad (NC - apostilled and translated? )

Me:
Birth certificate (Peru - apostille and translated)
Naturalization (NC - apostille and translated)

One quick point. You do need (and I believe it is impossible to get anyhow) an apostille for the naturalization records. Also, and I think there may be some disagreement on the forum about this, I don't believe the non-direct line certificates are needed. That being said, if you have them, bring them.

Hope that helps. Ciao.

Because I am dealing with 3 different countries, and I am dealing with New York, I rather have extra stuff than not have sufficient stuff. Thanks for your help.

Will you be translating the docs? There are translation services that provide apostille as well. My friend used Apostille Pros www.apostillepros.com for certify translation and apostille.

Sounds like a lot of work for you. Good luck.

Also, you might want to consider scheduling your appt now, even if you don't have all your info ready to go. I'm not sure what the wait times are like in NYC, but some consulates (including here in Philly) are really backed up. I made the mistake of getting everything ready first, then calling to schedule my appt, that was in June - I still don't have an appt even scheduled. Might be something to consider. Good luck!

How long did it take you to get all of your paperwork? I have a family member who already did all of that but filed in Peru. I'm planning on traveling there to also help expedite the process of getting the rest of the stuff.

It didn't take long to get the docs (although I started researching the idea something like 3 yrs ago now). Luckily, I started with a copy of my GGF's Italian birth cert. so I didn't have to find on in Italy. The longest part was waiting for the naturalization records, if memory serves me it took 4 or 5 months to get the C-File number and another few months to get a copy of the document. All the other docs were quick to come. I'm hoping to get an appt scheduled in January probably for the summer of 2012 (if Philly is even still open then :) ).

Originally I was going to apply through Philly but then I moved to NY, so now i'm applying there. With my ggf - I was able to call and get the C-file number immediately, they told me they had it and that it would take only a couple of weeks. I sent it out Friday, so hopefully sometime in December I will get it :)
