Lu before a name
Lu before a name
I'm looking at a birth record and the mother is listed as Lu Monica Erminia. I don't believe I have seen this before. Can anyone shed some light on its purpose?
Thank you
Thank you

Are you absolutely sure it is not fu in front of the mother's name?

Re: Lu before a name
That was the first thing that came to my mind. It is quite neat and easy to read.
I'll image it for you.

Re: Lu before a name
It definitely does look like an L. I wasn't trying to doubt you, but I've never seen that before. However, I just found that there are Jewish surnames in Sicily (not that that helps with surnames in SMCV) that have Lu. Look at this link:

Re: Lu before a name
I see your point, but her name does not sound Jewish.

No, I am not saying it sounds Jewish. I just happened upon that website when I searched, and it just struck me as interesting.
In SMCV, the surname in the current phonebook is either La Monica or Della Monica, but it doesn't look like either in the record. I really don't know what to tell you, Jim. I've never seen anything like this before.

Re: Lu before a name
Peg, I think you nailed it!!
I was incorrectly viewing Monica as a given name. It isn't. I think the faded ink simply doesn't show the closing an an a.
Thank you

Re: Lu before a name
I am studying that letter U thinking it might be an A, but it still looks like a U to me, but I am guessing that La Monica is the surname. Hopefully it will appear again in some other document to confirm the correct spelling.

Hi Peg
I found another birth act and the name is definitely Lamonica.
Thank you for helping me to figure it out.

Re: Lu before a name
Jim, it is definitely La Monica Erminia
Re: Lu before a name
When I looked at this record, all I saw was Lu, and the script was so perfect in this area that I didn't consider anything else. I then compounded the problem by locking in Monica as a given name (it is quite common as a given name here in the states). I am very familiar with Lamonica as a surname but never considered it until Peg mentioned it.
It must have been a senior moment.
Thank you for helping me back onto the tracks.
